Other Mommy ruled and I don’t understand its hate

Without spoiling, I thought the overall effects, plot, scares and everything were great in this movie. The performances were fine enough but Jessica Chastain does a great job being an emotional wreck and genuinely creepy in this film. I’m shocked to see how badly it’s been getting reviewed.

Is this an Obsession? Absolutely not. Is it Backrooms level? No. Is it still good? Yes.

The worst I can say about it is that the pacing isn’t great and it overplays its hand in terms of what scares it wants to produce. I love how ambitious it gets though and I wish more horror would go that direction (just maybe not all in one movie like this one tries)

Overall I’d throw it around a 7/10. Not nearly the 18% it’s receiving on rotten tomatoes. What do you guys think?

Hot take: if the movie wasn’t the “first Star Wars movie in 7 years” it would be way better received

After seeing a lot of the common criticisms of this film, I genuinely think it boils down to how much pressure was on it to fulfill expectations in the seven year gap of movies after Rise of Skywalker and I don’t think this movie was ever meant to do that.

For context, I personally enjoyed the film a lot and felt like it was a nice return to form of isolated storytelling for The Mandalorian and Star Wars on the whole but something I can’t help but agree with is that it did not feel like anything big and spectacular. This should’ve been an “A Star Wars Story” in between a new trilogy or at least released between seasons of the show because here, after all this time, it feels like it’s too safe to even be meaningful or make anyone feel anything new about the franchise.

Like I said, fun movie and not bad from a writing standpoint, certainly the best movie Disney has made since Rogue One, but it’s getting unfairly hit by all of the pent up frustration with this franchise as a whole since Disney took it over and had it come out at a different time it probably would’ve been taken at face value rather than be such a disappointment to some people.

Let me know y’all’s thoughts though. Was this the right time for this movie or should they have waited?
