Tennis in Philly
Hey guys. I'm (27M) originally from the Philly suburbs, left for college + some time after, and just moved back a few months ago. I live in NoLibs now.
I played a lot of tennis growing up and am looking to get back into it. I was never super competitive so I didn't join tournaments or anything, but I played team tennis at my club and also played for my high school. I was pretty consistently at the bottom of our varsity team, to give an idea of my level. I've only played a handful of times since then though so my ability may have diminished, lol.
I'm not sure where I want to take this yet, but for now I think I'm just looking to hit a ball around with people around my skill level and maybe make some friends out of it. I don't think I really want to pay for a club or a class at this stage. I've looked around online for different groups or meetups, and wanted to see if people had any experience with them:
TennisPhilly.com Partner Program: It seems like they just match you with people in your skill level to play around casually. This seems decent to me, but do I need to get USTA rated somewhere first?
Meetup.com : There are a few groups on here. Just wondering if anyone's had success with these either. There's one that meets at Schuylkill River Park on Sat mornings that looks casual.
I've also seen people suggest just going down to FDR park on a weekend morning and asking around.
Am I looking in the right places? Am i missing something or should I look elsewhere? Ideally I'm looking for something in the city proper that I can take public transit to. Beyond that I'm pretty much open to anything. Let me know your thoughts!
