Where in Philadelphia can I find affordable places to rent

Hi there, I live in Upstate NY and I am looking to relocate to Pennsylvania. The job is remote and just requires me to stay in this state and work remotely from here.
My question is which is a better place in Pennsylvania to find an accommodation within $600 monthly rent preferably with a college community. I am moving from a college town in upstate NY where I was paying 450 a month for a private room and was wondering if I can expect the same here.

Looking to move to Philly from NYC — neighborhood suggestions?

Hi y'all :-) I'm a 30F who currently lives in Queens. I've been really drawn to Philly and thinking about moving there at the end of the summer. I'm looking for suggestions on neighborhoods to look for apartments in. I'm a designer who works remotely ($102K...before tax lol) and have been told to look into Fishtown, Northern Liberties, Kensington, Queen Village, and Fairmont. Any strong opinions about any of these/other areas?

Would definitely not want a new luxury building, but I'm looking for an area that's walkable to cafes/shops/bars etc and feels young-ish (or just cool, doesn't have to be young tbh), and feels relatively safe. I also love climbing, reading, parks, and riding my bike! Any advice? Give it to me straight!!!

Where to buy replacement windows

I need to replace the windows in my house. I have the installation covered; I just need the actual windows. Does anybody know an affordable place that isn't Lowes or Home Depot where I could buy the windows? I don't want cheap, I just want the best value for my money.

Rent tips

Hey. I’m a 27 year old single woman living in South Jersey, but I’m really drawn to Philly and would love to move there while keeping my current job. If anyone has made a similar move, I’d be grateful for any advice you could share.

I’ve heard that there’s an extra fee for renting in the city. Also, would they deduct taxes from both states?

Any realtors you recommend? Thank you people!!

Impromptu solo trip for Memorial weekend as a first time visitor. Any tips or recs?

I'll (39/F) often take little solo trips around holidays and base my destinations on whichever is most affordable. Philly won this time around! I'll be flying in from Michigan and staying at Apple Hostel. I'm deciding against a car since I've heard the public transport is pretty solid. Any tips for affordable fun/food in the old town area? I'm also curious as to which Septa pass would be best. I'll need transport to and from the airport and then just getting around for the weekend, three nights in total. Bonus points for cool thrift shops/museums/bakeries/cheap eats/nature maybe? TYIA!! <3

Tennis in Philly

Hey guys. I'm (27M) originally from the Philly suburbs, left for college + some time after, and just moved back a few months ago. I live in NoLibs now.

I played a lot of tennis growing up and am looking to get back into it. I was never super competitive so I didn't join tournaments or anything, but I played team tennis at my club and also played for my high school. I was pretty consistently at the bottom of our varsity team, to give an idea of my level. I've only played a handful of times since then though so my ability may have diminished, lol.

I'm not sure where I want to take this yet, but for now I think I'm just looking to hit a ball around with people around my skill level and maybe make some friends out of it. I don't think I really want to pay for a club or a class at this stage. I've looked around online for different groups or meetups, and wanted to see if people had any experience with them:

TennisPhilly.com Partner Program: It seems like they just match you with people in your skill level to play around casually. This seems decent to me, but do I need to get USTA rated somewhere first?

Meetup.com : There are a few groups on here. Just wondering if anyone's had success with these either. There's one that meets at Schuylkill River Park on Sat mornings that looks casual.

I've also seen people suggest just going down to FDR park on a weekend morning and asking around.

Am I looking in the right places? Am i missing something or should I look elsewhere? Ideally I'm looking for something in the city proper that I can take public transit to. Beyond that I'm pretty much open to anything. Let me know your thoughts!

Philly Recs

My husband and I are a newlywed couple in our early 20s relocating from Texas to the Philly area for work, and honestly we have no idea where to live. Every area we research seems to have completely mixed reviews, so we’d love some local insight.

We’re planning to rent for the first year while we figure out where we eventually want to buy. Budget is around $4k–$7k/month. We’d prefer something newer, pretty, and well-kept — ideally with easy access to Pilates studios, coffee shops, restaurants, grocery stores, etc.

Our biggest priorities are very safe, walkable, good parking, relatively close(under 15 minutes)/easy commute into the city, and newer/luxury apartment or townhouse options. (A private garage would be amazing.)

We’re open to both city neighborhoods and suburbs. We only have one trip planned before the move, so we’re trying to narrow things down as much as possible beforehand.

Would really appreciate any neighborhood/building recommendations, areas to avoid, or places we should tour. Thank y’all! Super excited to be in Philly. (Any food & coffee recommendations are welcome too!)

Anyone have to put a full-sized washer dryer in a row home where it sure seems like there isn't enough clearance?

So I've got a full size Whirlpool washer and dryer in my basement and its time to replace them. Thing is, it sure doesn't seem like there's enough between the door and the stairwell to have gotten them into my basement. It's like a ship in a bottle situation. They do not appear to be the type that are assembled on delivery, they look like they came fully stocked. Is there some trick the delivery guys use to get these things in and out? Essentially, can I order the same size and bank on the idea the delivery professionals are gonna know how to make it happen, or is that not a safe bet? Anybody else have experience in this area?

Moving to Philly with GF

My gf and I are both 23 and moving to Philly soon. We’re trying to figure out which neighborhoods would fit us best. Our budget is around $1700/month, and we’ll both be keeping our cars. I know that’s not ideal in Philly, but I’m stuck in a car payment and she needs hers for work and travel.

We’re both alternative and spend our free time going to emo/punk/hardcore shows, dive bars, etc. We’d prefer to stay away from Fishtown and Northern Liberties. We’ve been looking a bit at South Philly, maybe East Passyunk or Point Breeze areas, but would love advice from people who actually live there.

Main priorities are:

- decent balance of affordability and safety

- parking that is not impossible

- access to local music scene and shows

- good community for alt people in their 20s

Any neighborhood recommendations or areas we should avoid?

Thanks

Philly teachers looking for summer work - any leads appreciated!

Hi everyone! This sub has honestly been super helpful for us, so I wanted to ask here in case anyone has any leads.

My husband and I are both high school teachers in Philly looking for summer work. I teach Chemistry/Physics, and he teaches Math. We both applied for summer school through SDP, but it was really competitive this year, and we weren’t senior enough to get selected.

And a bit about us: We're both hardworking and caring people who genuinely love working with students and helping people.

I figured it couldn’t hurt to ask if anyone knows of any places hiring teachers for the summer, tutoring opportunities, programs, camps, etc.

Thanks so much again!

World Cup Game - Commute/Parking recommendations?

Hi - some friends and I are going to the Brazil vs. Haiti game on June 19. We will be staying around the Grays Ferry area. Any recommendations on how to get to the game? Is it better to get over the stadium through public transportation or to drive?

If public transportation - what is the best way to get there?

If it is to drive - uber or using our own car? Any parking spot recommendations?

Thank you!

biking in the city (west to north)

hi everyone! philly native here, but i’ve never biked through the city. my husband and i are moving back to the city for him to do medical rotations at temple, but we’re staying in west (where i’m from & where my family is). he wants to bike (40-50 mins) to temple and my mom is saying that’s insane. i know so many people regularly bike, but growing up here i saw years ago people get into mad fights & accidents with the crazy ass drivers in the city. is biking a good idea or what should he do to get into north?

mind you, i’m a west girl & only went to the city to south for school, so i don’t have much experience going up to temple’s campus. any suggestions would be helpful & i heard the L has gotten horrible since covid so idk if that’s a good alternative (an hour from west via L).
