Biphasic sleep and split nights

I recently learned about biphasic sleep, where before the Industrial Revolution, it was normal for humans to fall asleep at dusk, sleep for four hours, wake in the middle of the night for an hour or two, and then sleep for four more hours. It made me wonder if split nights are actually biologically normal for babies.

Has anyone else thought about this?
