If you visit Ninna-ji Temple

If you visit Ninna-ji Temple in Kyoto, see if you can find the “cat” and the “rabbit pounding mochi.”

They are said to have been left behind by the traditional temple carpenters as little touches of whimsy during restoration work.

In Japan, there is a traditional belief that the patterns on the surface of the Moon look like a rabbit pounding mochi (rice cakes).

🔪 Buying a Kitchen Knife in Kyoto? These Are the Shops I’d Recommend.

If you’re planning to buy a Japanese kitchen knife while visiting Kyoto, here’s one thing worth knowing.

Kyoto is home to several long-established knife makers whose histories are rooted in the city’s swordsmithing tradition.

In recent years, however, some stores have been marketing Sakai-made knives (from Osaka) under the “Kyoto” name to attract foreign tourists. Before buying, it’s worth checking where the knife was actually made.

To be clear, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with Sakai knives. They’re among the finest in Japan.

The issue isn’t the knives themselves—it’s stores that aren’t transparent about their products’ origins and instead rely on Kyoto’s reputation as a marketing tool.

If you’re looking for a knife that genuinely reflects Kyoto’s bladesmithing heritage, these are the shops I’d recommend.

【Kikuichimonji】

https://www.kikuichimonji.com/

One of Kyoto’s most prestigious knife makers, with a tradition tracing back to the swordsmiths appointed by Emperor Go-Toba during the Kamakura period (1185–1333).

Today, the company applies techniques inspired by traditional Japanese sword-making to produce high-quality kitchen knives. Their handmade scissors are also highly regarded.

【Aritsugu (Nishiki Market)】

https://aritsugu.co.jp/

Founded in 1560 by the swordsmith Fujiwara Aritsugu.

Originally established as a swordsmith’s workshop, Aritsugu later became an official supplier of edged tools to the Imperial Court for generations. Its hand-forged kitchen knives are highly respected by professional chefs, and the shop also offers traditional copper cookware and other Japanese culinary tools.

【Yoshisada (Shichijo)】

https://yoshisada.jp/

Founded in Kyoto’s Higashiyama district during the mid-Edo period.

The 10th-generation owner, Teiichiro Yamaguchi, is one of the few remaining craftsmen preserving the traditional techniques of Kyoto-style blades. In recognition of his contributions to the craft, he received the Medal with Yellow Ribbon from the Emperor of Japan in 2011.

【Yasushige Hamono】

https://www.yasushige.com/

Established in 1700.
A long-established Kyoto knife maker with more than three centuries of history, producing traditional Japanese edged tools.

【Kanetaka Hamono】

https://www.kanetakahamono.com/steel

A respected Kyoto knife retailer specializing in high-quality Japanese knives for both professional chefs and home cooks.

If your goal is to bring home a knife that truly reflects Kyoto’s own bladesmithing tradition, these are the places I’d trust.

Looks Refreshing. It’s Not.

Summer in Kyoto: it looks cool and refreshing… until you realize it’s so hot that not even the riverbanks have anyone on them.

Wear a hat or use a parasol, and don’t forget to stay hydrated.

Titanium Bezel Replacement (GW-M5600 × NATO Nylon Strap)

I bought a titanium bezel thinking it was entirely matte black, but I was disappointed to find that the top surface had a glossy finish.
So I sanded the coating off with waterproof sandpaper.

Then I tried heating the exposed silver-colored metal with a gas torch, but it didn’t turn blue, which made me wonder if it might not actually be titanium after all.

I had just replaced the rechargeable battery and waterproof gasket on my 18-year-old GW-M5600 with a NATO strap, and for now I’m happy because I managed to give the entire bezel a uniform matte silver finish.

Does anyone here like David Bowie?

There’s a famous photo of David Bowie taken in 1980 standing in front of a train. It was taken at Hankyu Kyoto-Kawaramachi Station, in front of a train bound for Umeda.

You can buy a platform ticket, so you don’t have to ride the train to go onto the platform and take a commemorative photo.

If you do take a photo, just be sure to stay safe and avoid getting in other passengers’ way. As long as you’re considerate, it’s fine.
