Choosing right companion for my doberman
Hello everyone
Im trying to find a perfect match for my 5 year old doberman. Im looking for a small breed dog to be a good companion for him. And looking for suggestions on who can be a good match for his personality.
Crowley is 5, i had him since he was a puppy, he is trained well and behaves good 95% of the time. He generally does not like dogs, barks when he sees them on walks, we do not say hi to other dogs or go to dog parks, BUT if a friend comes over with a dog or we go to someones house that has pets he is either tolerating them or likes them. He got along with maltese variations and all those small dogs, with other dobermans, loves cats, we often babysit one. I would get another doberman no questions but I already have anxiety over losing this one and don’t think i will survive the heartbreak. (He is fine health wise i just see what happens with many)
He is a more or less calm comparing to other ones ive met, not as active as dobermans usually described, he is good with 2 long (45 min-1 hour+) walks a day plus playtime. Likes to play rough but gentle with cats and small dogs. Plays with dogs we happen to spend time with only when he wants to play with them, if they are too pushy he does not like. No resource guarding, no aggression, likes to nap. He is used to moving or going somewhere for short and long period of time. He is crate trained, but never goes in it anymore, when he is alone he just sleeps, never destroyed the house or anything at all he was also perfect as a puppy..
Not sure what else to add about his personality..
So i am looking for a small breed dog, i do like basenjis, looked into toy manchester terriers and min pins. I kind of don’t like any other small breeds but open to suggestions.
I do believe that if i raise a puppy together with him the puppy will be similar ish, but you also can’t train out breed traits.
I’d like to know if anyone has a doberman with basenji or min pins or toy manchester terriers, are they actually crazy or with training will be good? Are tour dobermans annoyed at them at times or not?
Just to add i could get a cat but i do not to have one right now. I do understand i am getting a dog for me as much as for him. Do i think he absolutely needs one? Probably not but he was kind of sad after spending 3 weeks with doberman friend.
