Help with puppy food

My 5 month old has been having loose stool problems only on her 2nd daily poop for a few weeks. Solid in the morning but basically diarrhea at night. I’m having a sample checked for parasites but have bought and done an allergy and intolerance test and found she is severely intolerant to white fish meal and mildly intolerant to brown rice. I currently feed open farm salmon recipe which has whitefish meal as a main ingredient. I’m trying to feed her quality ingredient kibble so the two I’m thinking of switching to is Purina pro sensitive stomach but I dislike they use canola meal, and farmina puppy lamb and blueberry as the ingredients used are great. Does anyone have experience with either or have recommendations for other kibble.

Choosing right companion for my doberman

Hello everyone
Im trying to find a perfect match for my 5 year old doberman. Im looking for a small breed dog to be a good companion for him. And looking for suggestions on who can be a good match for his personality.
Crowley is 5, i had him since he was a puppy, he is trained well and behaves good 95% of the time. He generally does not like dogs, barks when he sees them on walks, we do not say hi to other dogs or go to dog parks, BUT if a friend comes over with a dog or we go to someones house that has pets he is either tolerating them or likes them. He got along with maltese variations and all those small dogs, with other dobermans, loves cats, we often babysit one. I would get another doberman no questions but I already have anxiety over losing this one and don’t think i will survive the heartbreak. (He is fine health wise i just see what happens with many)

He is a more or less calm comparing to other ones ive met, not as active as dobermans usually described, he is good with 2 long (45 min-1 hour+) walks a day plus playtime. Likes to play rough but gentle with cats and small dogs. Plays with dogs we happen to spend time with only when he wants to play with them, if they are too pushy he does not like. No resource guarding, no aggression, likes to nap. He is used to moving or going somewhere for short and long period of time. He is crate trained, but never goes in it anymore, when he is alone he just sleeps, never destroyed the house or anything at all he was also perfect as a puppy..

Not sure what else to add about his personality..

So i am looking for a small breed dog, i do like basenjis, looked into toy manchester terriers and min pins. I kind of don’t like any other small breeds but open to suggestions.

I do believe that if i raise a puppy together with him the puppy will be similar ish, but you also can’t train out breed traits.
I’d like to know if anyone has a doberman with basenji or min pins or toy manchester terriers, are they actually crazy or with training will be good? Are tour dobermans annoyed at them at times or not?

Just to add i could get a cat but i do not to have one right now. I do understand i am getting a dog for me as much as for him. Do i think he absolutely needs one? Probably not but he was kind of sad after spending 3 weeks with doberman friend.

Please help with advice

Freya is 5 months!

Hi all,

You all loved Freya so much when I first brought her home I figured I’d give you some updated pics! She’s potty trained, and doing well with leash training.

Barking and Stranger must mean danger

Archer is 10 months old and has had a trainer since the beginning of March. They come twice a week and take him out in highly pup populated areas to work on his reactivity with other dogs. He is not aggressive but barks constantly at other dogs. If I let him say hello he stops immediately and lays down to play and introduce himself. I am doing everything the trainer says and still can't break him of this. He is perfect with the trainer, he is calm and still when other dogs are around him during their sessions, just not with me. We are going back to the basics to establish that I am the alpha and at home its perfect, public... not so much. Any tips?

Also, I am a single woman, Archer has only met one guy I dated and was fine with him. Now on walks hes stiffens up and goes into a protective stance when a male is in the area. He will not let them near me and if I have my children with me he herds them away. I don't necessarily mind him not letting male strangers come around us, kind of the point of a "scary dog" but do not want to promote this as the correct action for all situations. He does not bark at them but at the same time nobody has attempted to come closer when he does this. You can most definitely tell he's saying "close enough". Also when he does this I am not able to get his focus back on me, he is locked in on them. I have tried treats, toys, petting, talking and moving in the opposite direction. So far all have failed. His trainer is helping but both but when the trainer is around, he does non of this. Advice on this would be helpful also.

Is anyone else’s Dobie an elite sniper when it comes to nose jabs in the crotch or butt?

My Doberman is notorious for spearing people between the legs like it’s her day job. Nothing brings her more excitement than seeing someone crumble to the ground after receiving what feels like a Mike Tyson-esque blow to the groin. Does anyone else experience this?

my boys first time playing with another male since his attack

my sweet baby was brutally attacked by a male pitbull last august. he spent days in an ER vet battling sepsis. since then he has developed lots of anxieties when he used to be the most confident boy. specifically around males on leash, he becomes a different dog. he’s so sweet and has never been an aggressor. yesterday, i brought him to a mutual friends house (nobody had told me of the other male dog prior) and this happened. i was so scared, but i remembered what my trainer had told me about interactions and let go of his leash and just trusted him to take care of himself and was ready to step in. he was so scared at first, since this dog did resemble the dog that attacked him quite a bit, but after realizing he was okay, and me pretending to have 0 anxiety so he would not sense it, they played so hard and had so much fun. it’s a relief and i DID cry a bit. think it healed him a bit

Wobbler’s Syndrome… UPDATE

I made a post a few days ago showing my baby boys’s abnormal walk indicating Wobblers Syndrome. After that video I posted a couple days later Vinci’s right hind leg and swollen up 3x the normal size. Multiple CT scans and and MRI later, Chondrosarcoma was found and confirmed in the hind leg that was swollen. Amputation was expected. Another thorough MRI was done and imaging showed multiple concerning areas along the spine. I was led to believe even if amputation of the leg was done because of the multiple areas of the spine showed compression of the cord and signs of cancer spread Vinci would have a long and painfully hard recovery. The chances of him walking would be slim.

Vinci crossed the other side today. 2/14/19 - 7/4/26. 7 years young.

Cherish every moment with your babies. Never give up on them.

I was very proud of my boy today.

Roscoe (2 years) is reactive. He tends to become defensive when walking out in public and he sees another dog ir someone approaches us. However when in a large crowd he does really well. My husband tends to have the philosophy of, "Well he whines in the car so he can't go in the car." Or "He barks at strangers so he can't go around the public." I feel like how will he ever get better without practice and familiarity? So he came with us to the Independence Day celebrations in the park and he did SO well! I was so proud of him. He was observant but calm and even when an unsupervised kid threw a firecracker at us, (which I promptly took care of) Roscoe maintained his composure. I just love him so much!

My 11.5 yr old girl and her 4 mo old brother

She (if it’s not obvious, the red Dobie) is enjoying having someone to run around with. I think he will keep her younger for longer!

In case anyone wants to know, she has been getting The Missing Link Senior Health Formula since she was 7 yrs old. I also feed my dogs Stella and Chewy’s Freeze-dried Raw Food Toppers (I bounce between beef and chicken). Love and adore my girl and my boy!

9 Week Doberman Coat Concerns

Thank you in advance for any response and/or support!!

First time Doberman owner here. I want to be upfront about everything because I genuinely want real input from people who know this breed.

I got her at 7 weeks old. She was the only red in her litter, mom is black and dad is blue. I’ll be the first to admit that 7 weeks was too soon and I agree with that completely. The very next day I took her straight to the vet for her deworming and vaccinations. She came back underweight at 6.8 lbs when the vet wanted her closer to 8 to 10 lbs for her age. We just got confirmation this Monday that it was tapeworm and she’s now finished all her medication. That part at least feels resolved.

What I’m still trying to figure out is her coat. From the day I picked her up the hair on the back of her neck and along her spine was already thin and sparse. This was before anything I did, she came this way from the breeder. She’s 9 weeks now and gaining weight well. Her legs and paws actually have really thick healthy hair which gives me some hope. The thinning is just concentrated around the neck and spine with some dandruff mixed in. Outside of that she is thriving. She already knows sit, stay, come, and is working on go home which honestly blows my mind at this age.

She’s eating Fromm Large Breed Puppy with goat milk powder, omega oils daily and a scrambled egg added to her last meal on Sundays.

At her first vet visit the doctor mentioned possible genetic CDA coming from the blue father. That caught me off guard since she’s red but it wasn’t ruled out. My next move is pushing for a skin scraping; before I accept CDA as the answer.

Has anyone seen CDA show up in a red Doberman with a blue parent? Does the neck and spine thinning sound familiar to anyone? If you’ve dealt with demodex in a puppy this young I’d love to know what early signs looked like. And honestly if you have a story about a pup who came from a rough start and turned it around I could really use that right now.

I’ve attached pictures of her the week I got her along with some pictures of her mom & dad.

I just want to do right by her. Any help is appreciated. 🐾

Happy 4th of July from Achilles and his sister Nola! (Also Achilles update)

For those of those who saw my post about getting the gastropexy and what we went through with my 13 year old boy Achilles and his bloat scare, we are just over a month out of his GDV surgery and he is recovery very well! We are down at the Jersey shore enjoying some 4th of July relaxing and he has been cleared to get wet so tomorrow morning we are going to take him to the dog beach so he can cool his paws off in the waves.

We had a few hiccups along the way with diarrhea as he was adjusting back to his regular diet and had to go about 2 weeks of a bland diet with antibiotics and pro pectalin but today he is back to his normal self for the most part and we’re starting to allow his activity to ramp back up and back on his old feeding regimen. Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend and staying cool in this crazy heat wave!

Right breed for our family?

My wife and I are looking to get a pup in a year or two and are considering a couple of breeds. Before kids we’ve had a senior boxer and a young dogo. We had to re-home the dogo right after giving birth to our first (she became very aggressive to our boxer and there was an opportunity to rehome her to a dog trainer with a farm. We get regular updates and have visited. She is doing great!).

Our boxer died two years ago and we ready for another pup. I’ve been interested in Dobermans for a while. One thing that “concerns” us is we’ve read that they typically bond to one member of the family. There are five of us (three kids under 7) so we need a dog that will be be bonded to all of us.

Those with kids / multiple people in the home, is this worry over blown or do they really only stick to one person?

Happy to get any other tips on the Doberman as a family dog! (We plan on doing IPO / protection work as well).

Should I intervene when my two littermate puppies play rough?

Hi everyone, I wanted to ask for advice from people who have more than one puppy.
I recently got these two beauties from the same litter. They are a male and a female, and they are beautiful, unique, and have really fun personalities. However, when they play with each other, they do it very aggressively and roughly, and I’m scared they might hurt each other.
Could you give me some advice? Should I intervene when they “wrestle,” or should I let them play since that might just be the way they know how to interact with each other?

edit- They live in separated places, I own the female and my brother the male, we own a business and when we go to work naturally we bring our puppies
