One Blastocyst

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some honest experiences and reassurance from anyone who ended up with only one blastocyst.

I retrieved 21 eggs. Only 9 were mature at retrieval, and from those, only 1 fertilized normally. Then 7 more matured a day later in the lab, and 5 of those fertilized, but unfortunately none of them made it to blastocyst. So now we are left with just one blast.

I’m struggling emotionally because it feels like so much attrition happened at every stage, and now everything is riding on this one embryo.

Our remaining embryo is a day 5, 5AA untested blastocyst.

For those who only had one blastocyst:
- Did it survive thaw for FET?
- Did it implant or lead to a live birth?
- Was it tested or untested?
- Did anyone have similar maturity/fertilization issues but still end up successful?

I know 5AA is considered a strong grade, but it’s hard not to feel anxious when it’s your only embryo.

Thank you 🤍

Has anyone had better fertilization from rescue matured (IVM) eggs than mature eggs?

Had a really unexpected outcome after my egg retrieval and wondering if anyone has experienced something similar.

I’m 33 and all of our testing came back normal for both me and my partner, which is why this outcome has been especially confusing.

I had 21 eggs retrieved. Initially, 9 were considered mature and underwent ICSI, but only 1 fertilized normally. The lab also said 4 showed “initial signs” of fertilization but ultimately didn’t progress.

The surprising part was that several of my immature eggs matured overnight in the lab through rescue maturation/IVM. Out of those, 5 out of 7 fertilized successfully after delayed ICSI.

So now I have 6 embryos total, and 5 of them came from eggs that were originally immature.

My doctor mentioned possible egg quality concerns, but I’m honestly struggling to understand the results. Part of me wonders whether the eggs that were considered mature at retrieval may have actually been overly mature or post-mature by the time they were injected, especially since the rescue matured eggs had much better fertilization outcomes.

My doctor also mentioned that the later-matured embryos seem to be developing faster than the original fertilized embryo, which makes this even more confusing.

Has anyone experienced:
- poor fertilization with initially mature eggs but better outcomes from rescue matured/IVM eggs?
- concerns about overly mature eggs affecting fertilization?
- rescue matured embryos making it to blastocyst or pregnancy?

I know rescue maturation usually has lower success rates overall, so I’m trying to stay cautiously hopeful while also trying to understand what might have happened biologically.

Would really appreciate hearing similar experiences or insights because this whole process has been emotionally exhausting and unexpected.

Only 1 of 9 Mature Eggs Fertilized with ICSI — Feeling Devastated

I’m feeling really disappointed and overwhelmed after our Day 1 fertilization report. We retrieved 21 eggs, initially had 9 mature, but only 1 fertilized normally with ICSI (2PN). The clinic said 7 more eggs matured today and were inseminated with ICSI afterward, so we are still waiting to hear about those.

The embryologist mentioned they suspect there may be an issue with calcium activation related to the sperm, but they are not certain. They said if we do another cycle they may recommend assisted oocyte activation.

I think what has been hardest emotionally is that I had so many follicles going into retrieval, so I really thought we would end up with several embryos. Watching the numbers drop so quickly has been heartbreaking. I honestly don’t know if I can mentally handle another retrieval cycle after this one.

Has anyone had extremely low fertilization on Day 1 and still ended up with blasts or a successful transfer? Also, has anyone dealt with suspected calcium activation/oocyte activation deficiency with ICSI?

Would really appreciate hearing others’ experiences because I feel very alone and discouraged right now.

Eggs:
9 were A graded
7 were B graded

We did all the diagnostic tests beforehand and they told us they saw no concerns and that it was unexplained infertility.
