Can I make my yarn thinner?

I have a ton of worsted weight loops and threads cotton yarn and I’m wondering if it would be possible to split it myself? Does anyone have any experience or recommendations for splitting a 4 ply into a 2 ply? Also would that be considered fingering weight? All of the patterns that I am finding interesting are calling for a thinner weight yarn and I want to use what I have instead of spending more money on something I don’t necessarily need. Any input would be appreciated!

I’m making a super thin scarf in stockinette and doing random color changes for my stripes. Ultimately I want to know if there is a better way to do color changes that won’t leave me with a million ends to weave in. And if not then should I be alternating when I add my new color in instead of only on purl rows? To help reduce bulk on one side of the scarf (assuming woven ends add that much bulk) Any suggestions would be appreciated!
