Implications of switching from knitting flat to in the round

Implications of switching from knitting flat to in the round

Hi! I’ve been knitting for 20+ years but I’m self-taught. I made this panel I’d like to use in a tank or sweater (still deciding as I go). I’m working on a back panel that I will graft to the sides.

I am considering finishing the bust and yoke in the round but I am wondering what the implications of this would be. Will my stitches be facing a different direction or twist the garment? Is there anything I should consider? I’ve made garments in the round that are finished flat but not the reverse. I prefer knitting top down but the castle pattern was bottom up so I’m trying to stretch myself and learn something new.

I will also be adding ribbing to the bottom after the front is joined to the back but that seems more straightforward.

One final question - can I knit in the round inside out so I can knit instead of purling? I know I *can* but I’m wondering if this will change the shape or drape of the finished piece.

Is my tension too low? Is it going to be too holey when I finish it?

I'm a beginner, I was having difficulty with moving around my yarn so I decided to lower the tension, but now I'm worried the tension is too low and that my short is going to be... Inappropriate for public use. I can upload more pictures if necessary.

What am I doing wrong?? I feel like I'm fighting my needles

I've been working on this little piece just to get some practice in but I've watched 5 videos on how to knit and Im having a lot of trouble with it. I feel like I'm constantly fighting the needle and getting random holes in my piece (which I think is because I missed one loop?) and my work is just uneven in general. I recently started to crochet and it was much easier to pick up so I can't tell if it's just because I'm learning or if I'm doing something wrong. I'd appreciate any video recommendations, but I was starting with the step by step sweater tutorial (https://youtu.be/wtofisZp7EA?si=UpXs7hQ6TxKsefeQ). Casting on and everything else was fine but the knitting part is really making me frustrated especially since I spent 40 minutes trying to make that little bit of the gauge swatch.

Help: is my cabling correct or did I go wonky ?

My cables look off, I’m not sure if I’ve done something wrong here. It’s an 8 row repeat. I attached a photo of the front of my top, the right shoulder cable, then the left shoulder cable. I have just begun the second pattern repeat on right shoulder. Last is a photo of someone’s finished project of what correct cabling should look like. (Note: the pattern picture has the cables twisting the same way, but I want my cables twisting mirrored)

Pattern: cold shoulder crop

Colourwork help

Hi everyone! I’m starting my first colourwork sweater. I’m wondering if it’s normal for the colourwork to not look as defined pre-blocking?

I moved through this section quite quickly so maybe I wasn’t being careful enough.

I made sure to hold the white on my left for colour dominance, and I’m keeping the floats stretched out to try and prevent puckering.

Just wondering if you would frog or keep going

Tips for neatly picking up sts along a slanted edge?

I’m making the Tombo Tee, which I’m obsessed with, but I’m not loving how the picked up collar is looking along the slanted edges of the neckline. I followed the pattern, using a smaller needle and picking up 3 for every 4 sts, but it still doesn’t look great (esp compared to the collar along the CO edge) and I want to redo it before I get too far along. Maybe I use an even smaller needle? Any other recommendations?

Also, in case it’s helpful, the slanted edges were made via k1, m1L/m1R increases. Next time, I’ll move the increases further inward by 2 or 3 sts to make it easier to pick up sts more neatly.

Messed up when reversing knitting direction?

Hi everyone, so I can tell I've made a mistake here but I have no idea how to fix it (very much a beginner). First picture is the side now facing me while knitting, second picture is the back

I am following this video: https://youtu.be/1l8J6VGJXEo?si=qn72L3USuYXrjC0y

I'm up to the part where I'm supposed to turn the beanie inside out and change the knitting direction. I can see something just ain't right, but I don't know how to fix it and I'm worried about making it even worse by trying to! Any help is appreciated! 🙂

Tension variation knitting flat versus in the round (sleeves).

*UPDATE- thanks for everyone’s help! I had no idea what rowing out even was, I just thought my yarn was creating a lovely texture lol- lesson learned!
I decided to frog the sleeves & knit them flat to keep a consistent texture. Thanks again!!*

I’ve been working on my cardigan which I had to knit the entire body flat. Now I’m working on the sleeves in the round and noticed my tension is significantly more consistent doing so. I had to try 3 different larger needle sizes because I was knitting so much tighter. I can’t find a perfect match but this was the closest IMO.
Will it look better after blocking?

Picked-up stitches leaning the wrong way after joining front and back of Camisole No.5

Hi! I'm a continental knitter, and I'm currently knitting the Camisole No. 5 by My Favourite things in the S size. I've just joined the front and back pieces at the bottom (they're connected by the shoulder straps on top), but something seems to be off. Every time I pick up a stitch, it looks like it's leaning the wrong way, and when I knit or purl it, it ends up twisted. I've checked that I joined both pieces with right sides facing onward on both front and back, but I can't figure out what the problem is. Has anyone experienced this before or knows what I might be doing wrong?

need help with german short rows

Hi, I started making Peony vest by Annie sews and it’s my first time with german short rows. I’m having problems with the part on the screenshot. How should my last row of short rows look like? I’m thinking: mds, then knit all the way? But why would I make mds on a last/first stitch in a row 🤯

Hat gauge question

I started knitting the bewind hat (https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/bewind-hat). I cast on 96 stitched with a worsted weight yarn to create an adult medium (for a 22” head circumference). However, once I started knitting the pattern, I was only getting about 14 inches of circumference. My gauge was slightly larger than the recommended gauge (recommended is 6 stiches/inch, I was around 7). I’ve frogged and am getting ready to recast, however, I’m wondering if I should recast a larger number of stitches, using my original measurements to create the measurements I want, or if I should switch to a larger needle.

I know this is a rookie question, I’m just looking for a more experienced opinion. Thanks so much!

What did I do wrong and do I need to redo the row? Big gap between cables

It's not noticeable unless I kinda pull it down, but it doesn't look quite right

New to this Reddit community - lost with this sweater

Hi Knitters!
I just joined this Reddit community and I’m not even sure this is the right flair or place for it but hoping someone has an idea:
My boyfriend saw this sweater at Dior recently and loved it. I am an experienced knitter so I have no doubt that I could make him one for Christmas, but I am not sure I understand the pattern. I’ve tried google image search to find a pattern and Ravelry, but I’m still a bit lost.
Has anyone worked with this type of pattern before and can decipher it for and with me? It looks like alternating sets of three or four rows of pearl and knit and then stacked on top of eachother in alternating patterns but I’m not sure.
Help? Any advice is welcome! Or if you have found a similar wool to this look, that would be welcome too! (Doesn’t have to be this exact color)

Helping adjusting neck on pattern

Hi! I am about to start knitting this pattern but would like to make the neck a mock neck instead of this neck. I’ve made a couple shirts and sweaters, but am still not comfortable going off-pattern.

My general thought is that I should use a mock neck pattern to start, then switch to this but I’m not really sure how to know that I have enough length and increases to get there.

Am I looking at this wrong? I really just need some help thinking through it.

Thanks!

Preventing ribbed collar from curling

I’m working a fitted raglan sweater.

A lot of the project notes say that the collar tends to curl up. I’m already worried it will be too big. I’ve heard that you can help with this problem by adding decreases. The question is, how many decreases?

Help with Knitlet, (possible guage issue)

Hello! I’m knitting the knitlet which is a reversible tank top, and I’m wondering if my gauge is off or if I’m just crazy. For reference I’m knitting a size small and I just finished doing the increases for the back piece but haven’t started doing the additional rows for the back. I had to go up a needle size because my yarn was more of a light-dk weight and when I blocked it, it was exactly 10cm per 19 inches stockinette like the pattern wanted. Any opinions will be very helpfu! (Length: 5.7, Smallest width: 9.5. Largest width: 10.8. All estimated)

Fixing a dropped stitch

How would you fix this dropped stitch? See it into place or ladder all the way up (about 4” progress)

Space between increases

What am I doing wrong here? I’ve tried to even out stitches with a crochet hook and hitch is why they’re different sizes, but my issue is the gap between the r/l leaning increases and the two center stitches. I can’t even it out with a hook so I imagine I’m doing something wrong. Just cannot figure out what my issue is. I followed a tutorial and am almost certain I’m doing everything correctly, I’ve done increases before with no issue. Please help!!

Made a Mistake on My First Project and Need Guidance

I started my first knitting project yesterday and it’s a dish cloth. On the pattern it said once you made it to 44 stiches to begin decreasing with knit 2 together. However, for some reason I ended up with 47 stiches and I have no idea how. Is there any way I can salvage my project or do I need to start over? Some advice would be helpful. Also, I’ll link the pattern below if anyone is curious

Sleeve too big

I am knitting my first jumper and I accidentally picked up too many stitches when starting the second (right) sleeve - is there anything I can do without frogging?
