I am doing a design in duplicate stitch for the first time and I am getting the same problem through all my tries.
Whenever I try to do the duplicate stitch design it is starting to bulge downwards a lot. It creates this Valley effect that I don't think will block out.
The base of sweater is made in Sandnes Kos, a blown yarn, and this sweater is recommended to knit in a blown yarn .
For the duplicate Stitch I have tried several different yarns I have at home. Everything from a heavier blown yarn to the combination I have more (lighter DK + mohair).
I have tried to do the stitches loosely, and tighter. In the picture it is tighter, but the result have looked the same whether they are looser or tighter.
If I use a much thinner yarn the green starts to poke through a lot which I don't think looks good either.
Is it a tension problem? Is it a yarn problem? A combination?
edit: solved! i think i was really overcomplicating it in my head. thanks for your help and patience everyone i really appreciate it
i keep hearing that knitting inside out is ideal for colourwork in the round but i cannot figure out how to do it! i just end up switching which side is the wrong side
it's really hard to find help with this because most search results are for how to fix accidentally knitting inside out, but i'm trying to doing it on purpose and can't lol. i've tried a few tutorials and still can't figure out how they end up with stockinette stitches on the inside while still doing regular knit stitches
for context i'm using magic loop
I’m knitting the saga sweater by petiteknit. I’m currently trying to make the gauge swatch and struggling.
In the pattern it says that the cable chart is read from right to left on the rs and from left to right on the ws. There’s an arrow that points to the bottom right corner and says start- so I gathered that I start on the rs but then on the second row there are cables that need to be done. Am I supposed to do the cables in the wrong side of the work??
Pls help me
This is a free pattern, the pointelle tie scarf. I completed chart 1, since it's worked flat I read the knit rows as left to right, but now I come on to chart 2 and the first knit row is right to left...
Was every row meant to be read right to left?
Does my pointelle look correct, do I need to continue reading my knit rows left to right and ignore the arrow?
Many thanks 🙏
I’ve knit a couple pair of toe-up socks with the sweet tomato heel. They all seem to be too short or too long because I haven’t figured out where to start the heel. Is there a measurement I can use to get this right.
i thrifted multiple of these knitted rectangles (short scarves?) to unravel and use as yarn for my crochet projects. i’ve successfully unravelled one of them completely but with a lot of difficulty. in crochet, i usually just find the slip stitch, untie it and then pull the yarn so it unravels easily, but this simply isnt cooperating with me.
just wondering where to start when unravelling because ive watched multiple tutorials but most of them use sweaters as examples and this is obviously not a sweater. any tips would be helpful, thanks!
Hi, I'm somewhat new to knitting (made a scarf 10 years ago so I know the basic 2 stitches but nothing since) I'm relearning and expanding my knowledge by attempting these socks and I got stuck where it says to do the stst.
Per my research that could be the stockinete stitch but in the pattern picture it doesn't look like any pictures or videos of it that I checked (it looks like normal stitches)
Is it a misspelling in the pattern? Is it a trust the proces kind of thing? Does it mean anything else?
Thank you for your time in advance🩵
EDIT: I'm working in a round on round needles if that helps see my confusion
I made my first cardigan - the Copenhagen Cardigan by Petiteknit and it has a ribbed button band.
I added the buttons with this video tutorial, so it isn’t sitting flush.
I’m not sure if i just knit a size too small or the button positioning is wrong/ something else?
Last photo shows some positive ease, so it’s not exactly form fitting.
Spent a lot time on this so if anyone has solutions, i’d really appreciate it!!
If anything, my gauge is a little loose. I followed the instructions exactly and it fits perfectly, except it’s too tight to pull all the way up.
EDIT: using the “Fisherfolk’s Fancy sock set” by Charlotte Stone Stone knits. This is the sardines one.
EDIT 2: lmao guys I’m so dumb. I read the instructions wrong about how long the foot needed to be before the toe 🥲 thank you guys!
SOLVED - THANK YOU!
Please check most recent post, the sock fits very nicely except for the heel.
What DK sweater patterns would you recommend for total beginners to knitting sweaters?
I've knitted blankets before but not sweaters. I keep reading mixed reviews of the Flax sweater so not sure where to start now. Thanks in advance!
I am trying to make a scarf for my sister. I showed her some patterns on Pinterest and she chose the diagonal stitch. I still can change the pattern if I wanted and she won't feel upset. I feel a diagonal stitch isn't for scarves so, anyone tried this pattern before to make scarves?
I have increased to the width I want but i would prefer if it was longer. Am I able to keep knitting, without increasing, to my desired length before starting the decreases?
I’m working on the gauge swatch for the Step by Step sweater by Florence. The pattern calls for worsted weight but the yarn I really want to use is DK.
The swatch wants 16x20 stitches. I got 17x21. I know I can increase my needle size but I worry this will make the sweater “holey”.
Is there a way to make this work given some math to do a larger size or should I just look for a DK sweater pattern?
I am freehanding a balaclava and have done the hood portion in Tunisian crochet. For that stretch classic with knit ribbing, I’d like to knit the front/face edge and neck portion (see yellow areas) in 1x1 or 2x2 rib. I already knit but haven’t tried putting them together.
I crocheted the hood in DK yarn with a 6mm hook. I also did a bit of swatching for the neck doing a couple of rows of Tunisian simple stitch (TSS) as a mock bit of hood and knitting off the other end of the TSS cast on. I found it to be really holey even with 4mm needles. I don’t mind if the knit portion is thinner but I would like the stitches to not seem super wide/holey or the transition really holey.
Has anyone else worked something like this? I would love any suggestions (particularly about finding the right hook/needle combination 😅)!
Thanks in advance ! :)
I have been given a beautiful opportunity to honor someone in the craft community. I responded to a Facebook post selling a bunch of crafting supplies. I saw stitch markers and yarn and immedietly reached out as I am a crocheter and wanted the stitch markers. The gentleman sold me several really nice project storage bags full of hooks, stitch markers, blocking pins, and other supplies for only $100. Its worth much more than that. When I got there to pick up the gentleman said he had only 1 request for me. He pulled out a small bag with 3 wip inside. He explained that his wife passed away and these were all her crafting supplies. His one request, is that I finish the projects she was making and gift them to someone who needs them and send him a picture when they're done. Even typing this out makes me want to cry, I think this is such a beautiful request and im greatful for this opportunity to honor his wife, so Im going to do the very best I can. But im a crocheter not a knitter. Ive started learning knitting, and I understand the very basics and can follow a tutorial.
Here's my ask of you, I need help understanding the projects she was working on and what I need to learn in order to finish them. For any complicated details like neckline and joining panels Ill be using crochet stitches as that's what im confident I can do well. But for the pieces she already started, I want to try and finish them the way she was making them. So I need:
A) ideas for what the overall project is supposed to be, what it should look like, and the intended structure
B) the names of the individual stitches
C) the pattern/order of the rows and help identifying them/counting them
D) help in understanding what stitch she was on/what row/and what repeat
C) help understanding how to catch the dropped loops and fix the last row
The pink and white item, the gentleman said he believes is supposed to be a scarf. I think the gray piece is obviously a sweater being done in panels. The purple item Im not sure. He said maybe its a beanie, I think it looks like a sleeve maybe. Like a frilly/puffy sleeve. Any ideas for it are welcome. I also dont have the right yarns so im going to try and match them as closely as possible to finish the items.
For clarity, Im labeling every image to make it easier for people to explain which photo or row they mean when explaining something.
A - scarf, side 1
B - scarf, side 2
C - sleeve? Worked in the round so I think this is the right/outer side?
D - sweater, side 1, based on the clean line between the two gray sections I think this is the right side.
E - sweater, side 2
Starting with the scarf:
The top pink section I think is stockinette as it has vertical V's on one side and rows of purl stitches on the other side. In contrast I think the bottom pink section where it changes to cream is garter? Because I see rows of purl with rows of v between them on both sides. See picture F.
I think that is generally right, but I am struggling to identify individual rows on the bottom of the scarf, and where it is garter stitch vs a different pattern of alternating knit and purl. Image G is a slightly stretched, zoomed in view of the bottom rows. Most crafters dont like when people post asking for help without looking anything up, so im trying my best to figure out what's going on, and posting welcoming any corrections please. G.2 shows both sides with the rows lined up as closely as I could get them.
I can't always tell which rows are the back side of which, so I drew lines across any that im sure of. Because of the color change im confident the loops of pink are the same row as the picture on the left, and the white loops are the bottom of the white row on the left. I dont know how you count rows on the back since they end up over/under each other.
Im confused about which side is the right side. Im actively working on deciphering the individual rows and columns and will update my post as I go, but want to give anybody who knows what they are looking at a chance to answer quickly 😅
First edit: ive singled out the orange section. It is made of several rows of a stitch that creates forward and backside rows/columns. In the comments ive added two pictures. One showing the forward and backward rows in red and blue. Then based on those rows, I identified where that repeat stops, and the next different one begins. The next section is the last two rows of orange and continues into the white. It is a pattern where I see a front row and a back row continue as their own stitch. Then a group where a front, back, front are combined into one stitch. Then a back and front. Then a back, front, back. And repeated. That's what ive colored in the second photo.

I just finished adding the buttons on my loupy studios cardigan and it looks slanted when I button it up? I already blocked it but I’m not sure where I went wrong or if it’s possible to fix? Any feedback would be super appreciated, thanks!

this is my first time doing colourwork of any kind. i knit continental and i’m holding both yarns in my left hand, if that makes a difference. i’m also stretching out the stitches on my right needle every time i insert into a stitch where i’m changing colour, and i switched to knitting inside out after the purple repeat in case that helped. i also tried switching to a smaller needle for the two rows in between the colour repeats, because it seemed like maybe the stitches in those rows were slightly bigger and bunching because of that.
nothing i’ve tried seems to have helped - i’m still getting these bunched up vertical grooves (they go inwards when seen from the right side) between pattern repeats. any advice? i’m catching floats every 5-6 stitches as suggested in the pattern, and shifting where i catch them (last image is part of the pattern, with black dots to show where i’m catching floats). (it’s a scarf that will be seamed together, which is why the floats are on the long side as they’ll be fully hidden anyway)
thanks in advance!
Hello! Beginner knitter here! Is someone able to explain what she is doing in this video? I see she’s carrying over the first two loops in the row but what is she doing after that?
Hello! I’m making the mixed rib cami by handmade by Florence! I went to purl this stitch but it created a hole and I was going to ladder down but that didn’t work either. I’m stuck!
