I think I just found an easy way to circuit bend some old Sony cameras.
So I’ve circuit bent a total of two cameras: a Mavica FD95 and a Cyber-shot DSC-S30, both made by Sony and released in 2000. I’m assuming this method will work with other Sony cameras of around the same age, but no guarantees.
I noticed that for the sensor board both of the cameras used FPC connectors with electrical contacts on both the top and bottom of the connector, so I thought why not jam two FPC cables into the connector, one facing down and the other facing up?
So that’s what I did. I made sure to remove the plastic tab from one of the FPC cables so both cables could actually fit in the connector, then I plugged one of them where it was supposed to go and the extra one to an FPC breakout board, worked great for both cameras. I just needed to cut a small hole in the cameras’ plastic bodies, otherwise it’s easily reversible.
There’s no modifications to the output of the analog to digital converter so the effects aren’t as extreme as some posts here on this subreddit, but there’s still a wide range of cool melty effects of all colours and strengths.
