Ivar Stenberg, examining the historical SHL season.

"A historical SHL season!"

This is thrown around a lot, so i thought i would put this saying into context.
I will try to show how a high SHL production as an 18-year-old have translated to the NHL over the last five decades.

Ivar Stenberg produced at a rate of 0.767 points per game through 43 games this season in the SHL.

To show how special that is, only 11 other 18-year-olds have gone above 0.700 ppg before him; this include all players that starts the season in the calender year they turn 18.
This means, for example, Viggo Björck will start his season as an 18-year-old this year.

To differentiate, i will add D0 and D+1.

(H. Sedin is included in the 11 even if he only did 0.694 ppg; next in line had 0.657.)
(Players close to a new decade will be pushed into the new decade for separation.)

The 2010s:

  • William Nylander (6'0): D+1 2014-15 had 0.952 ppg through 21 games. Active NHL Totals: 750GP, 691P.
    Career high: 98 Points.
  • Kevin Fiala (6'0): D+1 2014-15 had 0.700 ppg through 20 games. Active NHL Totals: 707GP, 528P.
    Career high: 85 Points.

The 2000s:

  • Daniel Sedin (6'1): D0 1998-99 had 0.840 ppg through 50 games. NHL Totals: 1306GP, 1041P.
    Career high: 104 Points.
  • Henrik Sedin (6'2): D0 1998-99 had 0.694 ppg through 49 games. NHL Totals: 1330GP, 1070P.
    Career high: 112 Points.

The 1990s:

  • Markus Näslund (6'0): D+1 1991-92 had 1.000 ppg through 39 games. NHL Totals: 1117GP, 869P.
    Career high: 104 Points.
  • Niklas Andersson (5'9): D+1 1989-90 had 0.816 ppg through 38 games. NHL Totals: 164GP, 82P.
    Career high: 43 Points.
  • Peter Forsberg (6'0): D+1 1991-92 had 0.718 ppg through 39 games. NHL Totals: 708GP, 885P.
    Career high: 116 Points.

The 1980s:

  • Tomas Sandström (6'2): D+1 1982-83 had 1.000 ppg through 36 games. NHL Totals: 983GP, 856P.
    Career high: 89 Points.
  • Tom Steen (5'11): D+1 1978-79 had 0.739 ppg through 23 games. NHL Totals: 950GP, 817P.
    Career high: 88 Points.

The 1970s:

  • Thomas Gradin (5'11): D+1 1974-75 had 1.069 ppg through 29 games. NHL Totals: 677GP, 593P.
    Career high: 86 Points.
  • Kent Nilsson (6'1): D+1 1974-75 had 0.893 ppg through 28 games. NHL Totals: 553GP, 686P.
    Career high: 131 Points.

It's pretty remarkable how this stat has stayed so relevant over the last 50 years.
The profile of the type of player that goes over 0.700 ppg in the SHL is pretty clear: they are often on the smaller side with either elite skill or playmaking ability or both.

Key points behind the relevance of the stat.

  • The consistency when it comes to league-scoring seems to have kept the relevance of the points/game metric over time (for example, the Sedin's team Modo scored more goals during the 98-99 season then Stenberg's Frölunda this year.)
  • The evolving game seems to impact in both direction, so newer players always face a higher hurdle to pass. This also helps keep this stat relevant.

Rough historical distribution of NHL points from 18-year-old SHL players who scored above 0.700.

  • 130+ Point players (1) 9.1%
  • 110-120 Point players (2) 18.2%
  • 100-110 Point players (2) 18.2%
  • 85-100 Point players (5) 45.4%
  • Bust (1) 9.1%

We don't know where Ivar's production will land, but he is a promising prospect.
It would be poetic, given the close to 50-year difference between him and Kent Nilsson, if he becomes Sweden's next 130+ point producing player.

Note 1: The SHL has gone through name changes over the years, Division 1 > Elitserien > SHL.
Note 2: This isn't meant as a McKenna vs Reid vs Stenberg post.

Jason Bukala, Asst. Dir. of Amateur Scouting of the Panthers when they drafted Barkov say: "Stenberg has the hockey sense of Barkov as a winger". Who do you take 1OA? "Stenberg, i'm taking Stenberg without hesitation"

The whole interview was a quite good listen. Starts at 22.34.
