Anybody do all the adult hockey programs?

33 M. I am interested in learning to play hockey. I saw that the sharks ice rink in San Jose has 10 week programs starting with Adult hockey-learn to skate and all the way to advanced levels.

Anybody who was a absolute beginner at both skating and hockey do these? How was your experience?

The effect of the Sharks new D acquisition/core on Askarov's performance?

Right now, and I'm assuming here - the top 4D is some version of

  • Orlov - Trouba
  • Nurse - Kesselring
  • Dickinson - ?

Going from Leddy-Klingberg the year before, this is an big improvement (although I still consider this a average at best D core for now). The thing is they don't have to be the best, just have to be average. Askarov will probably appreciate the help, I expect him to have better SV%/GAA than last year.

Team friendly contracts

I've seen alotta ppl hope the players do this and I think there is nothing wrong with being hopeful but, especially since the Demidov signing, people keep comparing it to the Habs? Like there is alotta people saying the vibes are just as good here and team is happy to be here and even if we assume that's true am I fried for thinking its not really possible to replicate Habs contract environment by nature of having the Macklin Celebrini on the team.

All of their core guys are signed within 1.5 million of each other (7.8-9), nobody on the team is going to get that close to Mack's contract, there is massive difference between your superstar taking 17 mil instead of 20 mil and your elite players having to take 9 mil instead if 11-12 to be team friendly. Habs GM even says this during the signing press conference.

Other than it being a job and you should maximize your earnings, the contract also shows your value to the team. From the FO to the fans they value their young core pretty equally. But San Jose will always value Celebrini more and you can also see it in the fan sentiment of "as long as Celebrini signs, it's fine if X ends up walking." (Hope this doesn't sound like I'm saying the sentiment is wrong, its to be expected) Nobody calls MTL an individual players team the way SJ is Celebrini's team or the Hawks are Bedard's team.

Finally, perhaps most importantly, players value cup contention. MTL is fresh off of making it to the ECF while Sharks haven't even made it to playoffs. There is alotta hope yes but I don't think its fair to compare the situations at all. There is just no precedent set here and its not fair to expect the guys to set one now when the Habs precedent mostly originated from Suzuki signing during cap freeze/before his breakout. Ntm city cost of living diff, team sponsorship diff etc.

tl;dr Macklin is gonna get paid way more than the second highest paid player and that makes it difficult to replicate the Habs situation.

Edit: the point of this wasn't that the players should or shouldn't take less than they are worth but that people should stop comparing MTL'S situation/contracts with ours/our players as a realistic comp. Mack's contract will only set a team ceiling, wont be a team friendly precedent even if he takes the team friendly 17 instead of the max.

The Carlsson Offer Sheet

So after the Ducks locked up Mintyukov today, they still have to make a decision on Carlsson. If they match, they will have roughly 10M left in salary, and still would need to sign Gauthier, as well as some defensemen, as they've lost Zellweger (trade), Gudas (trade), and Trouba (signed with us). I don't think they have the money to do it all and will either have to shed other contacts or lose a 40 goal scorer who is still in their early 20s.

If they don't match, while Verbeek's been great drafting talent, those 4 1st round draft picks do nothing for them now. Plus they will still need to find a new 1C, and maybe rush McQueen's progression to the NHL to help fill the offensive loss.

All this to say, the Pacific may have just become much weaker, especially with VGK having to trade Dorofeyev and EDM still having donkey doodoo in net (along with LA thinking signing every old timer player is a good thing). VAN is still going to rebuild and Calgary, while adding some nice pieces, doesn't have a lot of firepower in their top 6. I think GMMG is just sitting back and giggling at all of this right now. We know he'll get Smith and Celebrini locked up before next off-season, and neither seems like the type to pull a Carlsson and ask for the bank.

So, my question, after all that, where do the Sharks land this year in the Pacific? Do you think our moderately better defense will help us finish 3rd or better?

Graff singing

does anybody have any ideas why there’s not a lot of buzz about Graff signing yet? What the heck are we waiting for?

Sincerely,
An uneducated hockey fan

Lines with only Celebrini

I know everyones been having fun coming up with hypothetical lines without Celebrini. But if Mack were the only Sharks player available, what would our lines look like????

Think Marchment could be a bargain at 7 million a year.

Like saw plenty of people saying it was a big overpay for him. Which for starters in this market wasn't at all the case anyway you want to cut it. But if you look at how he's produced the last 3 years. He was a 3rd liner for Dallas playing like 15min a night and could pencil him in for 50pts each year. 2nd year he had 47pts but he only played in 62 games. Last season if he didn't start out with the Kraken and their terrible offense for the first 29 games of the year where he only had 4 goals and 13pts. But then goes to Columbus and puts up 15 goals and 31pts in 39 games as a 2nd liner. So if he played the full year with the Jackets he probably easily goes over the 60pt mark.

Would imagine he will be in the top 6 for the Sharks imagine 2nd line and if he can put up 60 or so pts while also playing physical and heavy like he has in his career. Then paying him 7m for that level of play is a steal in my eyes. IDK how he will age so in later years might not be a steal. But hell by year 3 and 4 his AAV might be what some 4th line talent is making.

mack in oil paint!

been a while since i posted art here! i’m still new to painting and it is so much harder than pencil; this took me about 6 hours in total.
i’m a new fan (olympics) so this is my first off season. i miss sharks hockey soooo much, but the off season chaos is pretty entertaining to keep up with! i’m so excited for what next season will bring and of course i’ve still been drawing sharks regularly :)

Cap Implications from Carlsson Offer Sheet

I was initially really pro-Nurse, Trouba, and Marchment deals. They immediately make us a better team and increases our chances at success for the next few years.

With the 18m dollar offer sheet that Carlsson just signed, you can pretty much Guaruntee that it adds atleast 2 million to each of Chernyshov, Misa, Smith, Celebrini, and Smith. The offer sheet also walks Leo straight to UFA at 26.

It is honestly hopeful, but unrealistic that our core takes ‘team-friendly’ deals. Montreal’s deals honestly look better and better as the days go by. There is a serious chance that we are going to either have to trade away one of either Stenberg, Misa, Smith, Cherny, Dickinson, or lose them to an offer sheet.

If you asked 2 days ago, I would say there was probably a 10% chance of us losing one of the new core pieces due to cap reasons, if you asked pre July 1st, I would have said around 3% chance. I honestly think that percentage has raised to 40%-50% due to this offer-sheet.

It honestly affects us almost as much as it affects Anaheim. Things definitely got a lot more interesting for us.
