It IS Rocket Science! The Physics of 'Rocket League' Detailed

older video of Jared Cone explaining the basics of how rocket league was made. super interesting to listen to. he goes into depth on how servers work, and input buffers, and how the car cosmetic physics dilemma was solved.

mena flip keyboard & mouse

hello i'm here to both explain what i've learned and get any help from some better players about mena flip on KBM (not controller). i've searched youtube and reddit and there is very little information regarding the mena flip recovery on KBM so i tried to mimic it the best i could using controller videos.

what i've noted:

  1. timing timing timing - due to the fact you can't cancel air roll or side movements in rocket league, and you can only cancel back and forwards, you have to time the mena flip to where the air roll is naturally cancelled by the wall you land on (this is as difficult as it sounds)

  2. you have to hold s to cancel the diagonal flip, or else you end up with some weird wall bumps, because the car will want to jerk back to the original input decision (the full diagonal flip). (59 seconds mark) however, if you hold it too long, you'll end up braking a bit on the wall, making the whole mechanic useless, as it will slow you down.

i've attached a video showing some terrible completions of it, and then some of the mistakes i mentioned above.

if there are any kbm players that want to chime in to give some advice to the rest of the internet and myself feel free. (i could be doing this all incorrectly!)

Ball Near Misses

For aerials and some rolling balls, I often have really really close near misses to the ball.. almost like I'm just BARELY not touching the ball, is this normal? / how to avoid it? I am gold ii

looking for help on speed flips

i just want to know the cause of the car moving off center during the flip? is it to do with flip cancelation timing?

item shop revamp rant

after being a PC player that got to witness the overwhelming amount of shop items in rocket league through bakkes mod, it seems the shop purposely skips over re-selling some of the best items that have been in the game? anyone else that has used bakkes mod also feel this way?

no, i’m not talking about alpha boost.

one that always comes out to me (oddly specific but still an example) is the planetarium paint style, and the ability to change colors AT WILL with a color wheel

epic games, and its players know the next best thing to playing the game is customizing your vehicle. the money maker in this game is the cosmetic portion. go to the rocket league garage and look at the amount of wheels, it’s exaggeratingly never ending, yet i see the same 5 in the shop constantly.

they took away trading, they semi took away bakkes mod (online use)

i feel the next thing to address is this issue of car customization. confusing opponents and teammates is not an excuse to not have a color wheel when our name tags have the matching color of whatever team you’re on. on top of this, they have put out vehicle decals where you can’t tell what team it is anyway. having hundreds if not thousands of items that they have made, but continue to put out the same 3 wheels on repeat for every shop cycle is also a major issue to me. players continue to receive the same 4 goal explosion blueprints (that we still have to pay to unlock.) i’m hoping the new engine allows us to at least take some benefits of a color wheel for our car color.

IDEA: have players pick weekly (out of 3 items) in game which one they’d like to see in the item shop the most! then, have a system that keeps track of this, to then influence the blueprint items we get. maybe it’s not the exact item, maybe it is, but at least it’s the same kind of style.
