Free trees! Goal is more shade and tree-lined streets in neighborhoods.

The City of Port Angeles is thrilled to bring back the City Shade Street Tree Program for a fourth year! Developed in partnership with community member Paul Forrest, this program has been expanding our urban tree canopy by planting new trees in residential areas across the city.

As part of the program, residents can request up to two free trees through an online application process. Once approved, the trees will be planted in the public right-of-way, the area typically between the sidewalk and curb, near your home.

Approximately 90 trees will be available this fall, including the following species:

  • Sky Tower Ginkgo, Ginkgo biloba 'Sky Tower'
  • Persian Ironwood 'Vanessa', Parrotia persica 'Vanessa'
  • Starlight Dogwood, Cornus kousa x. nuttallii
  • Sterling Silver Linden, Tilia tomentosa 'Sterling'

Trees will be delivered to approved applicants on Saturday, October 24, following the City’s Arbor Day Celebration and Planting Demonstration. Each tree will arrive ready to plant in a #16 fabric planting bag. Applicants are responsible for planting the trees, watering them weekly during the first two summers, pruning and leaf raking as needed.

Port Angeles residents can apply now through Friday, July 31. City staff will review planting sites and work with applicants to offer species best suited for their location’s size, soil conditions, and existing utilities. Preference will be given to households who have not previously received a street tree as part of this program.

Community members who would like to support the City Shade Program are also encouraged to volunteer. Those interested are asked to submit a Volunteer Intake Form to the Community & Economic Development Department at ced@cityofpa.us

New Rule Regarding Meddling With r/PortAngeles

Howdy folks, this is an announcement regarding discussion of r/PortAngeles moderation on r/PortAngeles2. There recently has been something of a campaign on this sub (henceforth referred to as PA2) of users encouraging others to report the head moderator of the other sub (henceforth PA1) to Reddit for not following Reddit's rules for moderating.

This is something that we can't allow, as using one subreddit to have a coordinated effect on how another is run is, in itself, against Reddit rules. It's hard for us PA2 mods to be unaware of this, as the PA1 moderator in question has repeatedly reported us and messaged us, telling us in no uncertain terms that he'll make a continuous effort to get the PA2 sub removed for as long as there are posts/comments encouraging others to report his moderation.

Personal feelings aside, PA2 was never made to start a turf war with the moderator(s) of PA1, or to stir any sort of beef with PA1 in general. Most of the moderators here on PA2 don't particularly like being moderators or the drama that comes with it, but we felt (and continue to feel) it was necessary to give the Port Angeles community a space on Reddit that isn't beholden to the type of moderation present on PA1. But by allowing those posts about PA1's moderation, we lose some of our own agency from it.

So from here on out, the rule we're going to have to have is that the PA1 and PA2 subreddits are separate spaces, and users aren't allowed to use one to influence the other. This is not a blanket ban on discussing PA1, you're still allowed to criticize how it's run if you see fit, and of course cross-post things from there to here, but we can't allow meddling in their moderation. Thanks for reading, and we appreciate your understanding.
