Free trees! Goal is more shade and tree-lined streets in neighborhoods.
The City of Port Angeles is thrilled to bring back the City Shade Street Tree Program for a fourth year! Developed in partnership with community member Paul Forrest, this program has been expanding our urban tree canopy by planting new trees in residential areas across the city.
As part of the program, residents can request up to two free trees through an online application process. Once approved, the trees will be planted in the public right-of-way, the area typically between the sidewalk and curb, near your home.
Approximately 90 trees will be available this fall, including the following species:
- Sky Tower Ginkgo, Ginkgo biloba 'Sky Tower'
- Persian Ironwood 'Vanessa', Parrotia persica 'Vanessa'
- Starlight Dogwood, Cornus kousa x. nuttallii
- Sterling Silver Linden, Tilia tomentosa 'Sterling'
Trees will be delivered to approved applicants on Saturday, October 24, following the City’s Arbor Day Celebration and Planting Demonstration. Each tree will arrive ready to plant in a #16 fabric planting bag. Applicants are responsible for planting the trees, watering them weekly during the first two summers, pruning and leaf raking as needed.
Port Angeles residents can apply now through Friday, July 31. City staff will review planting sites and work with applicants to offer species best suited for their location’s size, soil conditions, and existing utilities. Preference will be given to households who have not previously received a street tree as part of this program.
Community members who would like to support the City Shade Program are also encouraged to volunteer. Those interested are asked to submit a Volunteer Intake Form to the Community & Economic Development Department at ced@cityofpa.us.
