Feedback for a first-time deployment

Hi! Been reading for a while, first time poster.

Run a WP website of knowledge articles (mostly primary sources and academic papers in History) with a ton of backlog in terms of what could be posted. Think tens of thousands of printed pages of documents, which could be turned into thousand or tens of thousands of blog posts for easy access. Thinking about seeting up a chatbot to help users navigate and find what they want. The idea for the prototype setup/alfa would be:

  1. LLM to provide NLP capabilities for users (Not sure which model to use)

  2. Cross-encoder to deal with the re-ranking (BAAI? Or is there a better option?)

  3. Still need to decide on the DB (have some experience with vector DBs like Chroma, still need to think through some of the choices)

Hardware: the WP site is externally hosted, so no overhead there. Got an older machine for prototyping (and learning to work within tight constraints): 16GB RAM, Ryzen 5 1400, GTX 1070 8 GB VRAM. Considering to maybe get an HP Z640 (mostly for the Xeon E5-1650 v4) for a two-machine setup, where all the LLM parts would be on the Ryzen 5 1400+GTX machine, while the Z640 would deal with the rest. And then probably use the Z640 to do other things like run Python scripts etc that we already have for processing data.

OS: CachyOS, no Windows for us.

Data complexity: a mix of languages, mostly from the South Slavic group, German, Russian, some Hungarian, Italian, maybe Greek, we'll see about Church Slavonic in the future as well.

Concurrency: probably not huge, it's a fairly niche area, but good to have some headroom there. If the need comes, can always upgrade hardware or move it to the cloud if that becomes an issue.

The chatbot comes in as a 0-temp system to handle users querying the system in different languages and smoothing that over with the multiple languages (and metadata) in the knowledge base. The output would be a straight set of links to documents that the cross-encoder spits out (at least to begin with).

Roast the idea and potential setup, so we can make it better (hardware limitations remain).
