Does anyone know where this is?

I keep seeing these photos shared on Reddit, but I don't know the exact location. If anyone knows where these are, please let me know.

Also:

  • Has this area already been cleaned up, or does it still look like this?
  • Is there any way to get in touch with BD Clean about it? Maybe this is something they could help organize or raise awareness for.
  • It could even make for a great YouTube project, showing the clean-up effort and the transformation.

If anyone knows the location, has an update on its current condition, or has contacts at BD Clean, please comment below.

What would it realistically take for Dhaka to stop looking like this in 20–30 years?

I came across a Reddit thread showing a canal in Dhaka filled with plastic waste, and the comments were pretty brutal. Some people blamed Bangladeshi culture, others blamed poverty, weak infrastructure, rapid urbanisation, and poor governance. It got me thinking.

Rather than arguing about who's to blame, I'm more interested in the solution.

Let's assume Bangladesh continues to grow over the next 20–30 years.

What would it actually take for scenes like this to become rare?

Would it mainly require:

  • Massive investment in waste collection and recycling?
  • Better enforcement and fines for littering?
  • Public education campaigns?
  • Producer responsibility for plastic packaging?
  • More municipal funding?
  • A cultural shift in attitudes towards littering?
  • Or is it mostly a governance issue?

Countries like South Korea, Singapore, and even many Western countries had severe pollution problems during parts of their industrialisation before cleaning them up.

So my question is:

Is this primarily an economic development problem, an infrastructure problem, a governance problem, a behavioural problem, or some combination of all four?

I'd be especially interested in hearing from people who have lived in Dhaka or other rapidly growing cities. What changes have you seen already, and what do you think is realistically achievable over the next few decades?

What do you think Bangladeshi culture actually is?

I've been thinking about this more as I've gotten older.

I live in the UK, and recently I've found myself wanting to get closer to Bangladesh and understand its culture a bit more. The more I read online, the more confused I get because everyone seems to have a different opinion.

Some people say Bangladeshi culture is fundamentally Bengali. Others say Islam is the biggest part of our identity. Then I see people talking about Arabization, while others completely disagree and say that's overblown.

Bangladesh has such a long history—ancient Bengal, centuries of Islamic influence, the Mughals, British rule, Partition, the Language Movement, 1971—and I feel like all of those have shaped who we are today.

I'm hoping some of you who live in Bangladesh (or know the country better than I do) can help me understand it.

A few questions I had:

  • What do you think Bangladeshi culture actually is?
  • What makes Bangladesh culturally unique?
  • What traditions, values or customs best represent us?
  • Do you think our culture is changing? If so, how?
  • Are younger generations holding on to our culture, or is it evolving into something different?

I'm not trying to make a political point or argue one side over another. I'm genuinely curious and would love to hear different perspectives.
