Do Bangladeshi nationalist view "Arakan" as theirs?

Im not Bengali but I would like to know if any chauvinistic Bengali nationalist voices exist in discourse in your country that express displeasure with Myanmar as a country and view war as a possibility?

21st August 2004: Grenade Attack on Opposition Party Kills 24 People (Gore Warning)

On 21st August 2004, Fascist Party Awami League had arranged a mass gathering in Gulistan, a coordinated grenade attack took place which killed around 24 men and women.

The BNP-Jamaat coalition government at the time didn’t make things any better for the victims by refusing to register the complaints in police stations, blaming the attack on the victims themselves and torturing a DVD shop owner (Joj Mia) into giving false confessions about being the perpetrator.

When a new Caretaker Government assumed power in 2007 they charged BNP leaders such as Tarique Rahman, Lutfozzaman Babor, Abdus Salam Pintu as being complicit in this attack.

After AL won majority seats in the 2008 General elections they continued the case and sentenced Babor-Pintu to imprisonment. Tarique Zia had exiled himself to London before the elections so he didn’t have to face any punishment.

After Fascist AL Government fell in Aug 2024, the new Yunus Government swiftly appointed new BNP/Jamaat leaning lawyers and judges to the Supreme court who cleared all BNP leaders from this case and freed them unconditionally.

Are digicams worth it?

Digicams are so hyped on recent days. And those who have it, do you think it's worth it? And even if i buy one, what brand should i go for? Nikon coolpix, sony cybershot, canon? Or should I just buy an iPhone for camera quality?

Women-only buses are a testament to how barbaric a country Bangladesh is

You won't find women-only buses in the most feminist countries in the world, for example Norway, Denmark or Sweden. Why? Because women there feel safe around men. Only in the most wretched of all places do you need to give women separate transportation for their safety.

Will these buses temporarily lead to less sexual harassment in public transportation? Yes, but it is not a long-term solution. It's easy to unveil some shiny little pink colored buses and act like you've solved misogyny. What's harder is to change our patriarchal culture that tolerates the intolerable against women.

If separating women from men will solve sexual harassment, we should just follow the former Saudi Arabian model, where there was a 'female corner' for women everywhere from restaurants to shopping malls. But did that model actually help women? No, it didn't.

The women-only buses also have that underlying misandry to it. The idea that men are so dangerously irreformable that seperating yourselves from them is the only way to safety.

And who says women are safe with women either? One of the most infamous cases of harassment against women in Bangladesh, the one at narsingdi rail station, was literally about one woman physically attacking another for wearing crop tops. Women in this country are disgustingly misogynistic too.

I'm a bit conflicted on the women-only buses. It might reduce sexual harassment at the moment. You could say, well, this is Bangladesh, not Singapore, so we better do what's practical here. And maybe that's true. But outside of that pragmatism, my ideals can never fully support it.

Land transfer to parent requires fees?

As-salamu alaykum,

Good morning, my fellow Bangladeshis,

I have a question regarding some land transfer going to my father’s name about before that I will tell you the whole story of it.

I am a male 35 years old born in London to Bangladesh parents. My whole paternal site including two aunts two uncles and my father have gone back to sell it to transfer some property, basically lands in their name so that they may pass onto the children when the time comes..

My father just contacted me regarding fees to transfer into his name and has asked for roughly 1300 British pounds.

Unfortunately, I know nothing about Bangladeshi land transfer laws, nor fees so I am very confused about this

My father has had some distrusting nature to him where he also attempted to take over and claim his siblings land hence why they have all gone there now.

If someone could please greatly update and inform me whether such large fees are normal or even require required during land transfer?

For any further information, he does have a second family with two additional sons and two additional daughters while I myself only have four younger sisters. There is also a chance he has married a young relative as his third wife.

I eagerly await everyone’s response as this matter is very confusing for those of us who do not live in Bangladesh but we do have a connection to the land where we hope to 1 day live in our motherland

Edit: the land is only 0.24 acres in size so not massive but not small either

I think having a bus exclusively for women was one of the best decisions a government could make.

As a boy , I'm actually very glad about this new initiative. I think it prevents harassment from men, especially since younger sisters who have to travel alone suffer through this constantly. But I honestly don't get the misogynistic cyber harassment surrounding it. I'm ashamed to admit that most of the men who are mad about this are the ones complaining because they want to ride the pink bus themselves. Like, these buses exist for a reason—to prevent harassment and ensure safe travel. Men are also mocking it with so-called arguments like, "Can women actually drive safely?" or "Why aren't men allowed?", alongside spreading rumors about near-accidents as if men aren't insecure too. All this time, men have been driving, and countless accidents have been caused by men, yet now they are using this as a cheap excuse to tear women down. Idk why, but in my opinion, both men and women built human civilization together, yet women are less mentioned and constantly criticized for the chaos that men invent. Like, I'm sorry if you're just mad because you can't harass young teenagers anymore—then cry about it.

Are We Slowly Losing the Music, Drama, Culture, and Nature That Defined Bangladesh?

For the past few years, I have been thinking deeply about different aspects of Bangladesh:our culture, music, drama, and nature and how much they have changed.
I stopped listening to Ayub Bachchu’s music after he passed away. At that time, I was living abroad. It was a quiet winter morning, and snow was falling outside. I entered my laboratory with a cup of coffee. I still remember sipping my coffee and scrolling through Facebook when, all of a sudden, I saw the news: Ayub Bachchu was no more.I was completely alone. A tremendous sadness came over me, but somehow, I could not cry. I simply sat there, trying to process the loss.

A few years later, Shafin Ahmed also passed away. I grew up listening to their music. When I was in Classes 11 and 12, I began listening to bands such as Aurthohin, Artcell, and Shironamhin. Each band had its own distinctive sound, style, and emotion. Now James is getting older, as are many of the artists we have loved for so long. Bassbaba is unwell, too. Sadly, I do not see anyone emerging who can truly fill the gap they will leave behind.
I feel the same way when I think about Bangladeshi drama. The actors who came from the stage and television during the 1980s and 1990s created work that remains unforgettable. We still watch their old performances, remember their characters, and feel a mixture of happiness and nostalgia. But when I look at today’s dramas, I struggle to find anything that can be compared with the depth, quality, and lasting appeal of those earlier works.

Even our natural surroundings are changing. The familiar birds of our childhood: the crow, the Magpie-Robin, and many others are slowly disappearing from our everyday lives. The sights, sounds, music, and stories that once defined our connection to Bangladesh seem to be fading away, one by one.

It makes me deeply afraid to think about what we are leaving behind for the next generation. What our government is doing? Have they ever thought about it?

Anna Cociarella, a foreigner, recognised something different.

If God resides in your heart, you will discern where injustice lies, no matter how hard someone tries to mislead you. Anna Cociarella, a foreigner, recognised something different. Reading just one book made her realize why Sheikh Mujib is called Bangabandhu. Reading a single book by Sheikh Mujib helped her understand why Bangladesh became independent, citing his love and humanity as the core reasons behind its liberation.

I am a Nepali, thinking of creating reaction videos on Bangladeshi content.

I speak decent bangla as I graduated from Bangladesh. But, I am losing touch with bangladeshi culture and language which was part of my life for some 5 years. I want to keep working on my bangla and I thought the best way to do it would be to create content speaking bangla and watching a lot of bangladeshi content. Do you guys think it's a good idea?

Emotion is not evidence.

Does anyone know where this is?

I keep seeing these photos shared on Reddit, but I don't know the exact location. If anyone knows where these are, please let me know.

Also:

  • Has this area already been cleaned up, or does it still look like this?
  • Is there any way to get in touch with BD Clean about it? Maybe this is something they could help organize or raise awareness for.
  • It could even make for a great YouTube project, showing the clean-up effort and the transformation.

If anyone knows the location, has an update on its current condition, or has contacts at BD Clean, please comment below.

CDMA network which was shut down in 2016, Citycell (470-05), found transmitting 4G LTE in Moghbazar, Dhaka. They plan to relaunch in December so this might be preparation for that.
