I built a quiet journal after unexpectedly losing my job. Now I’m sharing it.
Hi everyone,
A few months ago, I unexpectedly lost my job.
To fill the silence, I started writing down one small things each day.
“Rabbits ate my roses.”
“The coffee this morning was exactly right.”
“There are ants on my second-floor window. Where do they come from?”
Nothing deep. Just little moments.
That habit helped me more than I expected, so I turned an old side project into a simple private journaling app called Blinking Notes.
A few things that make it different:
- One sentence is enough - No pressure to write long reflections. Just enough to remember the day.
- No gamification - No leaderboards, no social feed, no productivity guilt. Your notes are for you.
- Focus on small things - What you noticed, read, ate, felt, or simply didn’t want to forget.
- Private by default - Your data stays on your device unless you choose to share it.
- Simple and quiet - Use tags and routines if you want, or keep it minimal.
The free version lets you journal forever. After 21 days, you can still write unlimited notes and continue tracking existing habits — you just can’t create new habits unless you upgrade.
There’s a small one-time purchase. No subscription, because I personally dislike subscriptions.
I also wrote a short piece about the philosophy behind it at blinkingchorus.com if anyone’s curious.
Blinking Notes isn’t for everyone. But if you’re tired of apps that constantly push, measure, and optimize you, maybe this will feel different.
Stay slow,
Justin
