Open Myomectomy Experiences
I’m 28 and currently on a 6-month waitlist for an open myomectomy for a 9.7 cm posterior intramural/subserosal fibroid. My main symptoms are painful periods and significant lower back/pelvic pressure. Ultrasound also mentioned possible adenomyosis changes, but my cavity is still considered grossly normal and the fibroid isn’t significantly impinging on it. He told me that it being posterior is not an issue or more complicated.
I refused Lupron/hormonal suppression while waiting because I’m not comfortable with the side effects. I’m also hoping to have kids in about 2–3 years, so fertility has definitely been on my mind. My latest ultrasound shows “myometrial changes of adenomyosis” which my surgeon doesn’t feel concerned about.
My OB is a MIGS surgeon who handles complex cases. Initially he wasn’t fully on board with surgery since the fibroid isn’t cavity-distorting, but after hearing my concerns about symptoms and future fertility, he agreed surgery was reasonable.
He also didn’t think an MRI was necessary because it likely wouldn’t change the surgical approach, but part of me still wants one for reassurance, especially regarding the possible adenomyosis.
Would love to hear from anyone who had:
open myomectomy for a larger fibroid
- posterior fibroids
- no Lupron before surgery
- successful recovery/pregnancy afterward
- How was recovery honestly?
