Analog Timer

This timer has worked like an absolute champ since I was a kid. But now it doesn’t want to automatically advance to the next zone. Obviously, I can do it manually and that isn’t the worst thing. But I’m (sadly) considering replacing it. That is until I opened this thing. So…

  1. Do I attempt to run new, more appropriate gauge wires to the valves to hook up to a new timer or try to use these as the wires run to the valve box under patio pavers?

  2. The current timer plugs in down in the basement directly below and there isn’t a close enough box (currently) to change that. Should I feed the power line from a new timer down into the basement just as it sits now?

Side note: these valve boxes were made a complete mess of by my landscapers last year. I’m hoping I can replace this timer myself as well as clean up the area around the valves a bit.
