2014 Honda CR-V EX-L (2.4L 4-cylinder)

Car broke down on my wife this weekend while I was out of town. She mentioned before the breakdown there was some knocking when marking a sharp turn. This has happened before when the oil is getting low. It burns/leaks and was probably due to be topped off. But she said the breakdown was pretty anticlimactic. It just stalled with no lights or sounds. She turned it off and hasn’t been able to start since.

I had it towed to the nearest shop with decent reviews and he told me the engine has no compression and the engine is likely shot just from *listening* to it. He also said because the engine has low/no oil the timing chain was probably compromised resulting in other catastrophic issues. It’s not worth fixing in his opinion.

Is this a good diagnosis? What do you think of the sound?

What is to be done about these gaps? When installing I thought caulk/wood filler would take care of it but now they seem too big to hide like that. The only thing I can think of is to rip out the old baseboards and replace it with taller baseboards that will lay on top of the beadboard and cover the gaps. I know I’ll have to add a spacer below the beadboard to be plum.

I was just curious if there are any easier fixes, or if my option outlined above is the “correct” fix.
