What style of investing style is suited under which situations.
Energy beat tech this year, thus far. Tech still drove the S&P 500.
Energy is the top S&P 500 sector in 2026 at +40.4% YTD. Information Technology is second at +30.2%. The index is up 12.9%.
The chart shows why that isn't the full story. Energy started the year at 2.8% of the index, so its gain added about 1.1 points. IT started at 34.4%, so its gain added about 10.4. One sector delivered roughly 80% of the index's gain.
IT's weight has since grown to 39.7%. If you own the S&P 500, you own that tilt. You didn't choose it. It grew with prices.
An equal split across the 11 sectors (S&P's own index) is up 9.0% this year, not 12.9%.
Question is what style is better suited for individual investors and in which situations - keen to know thoughts of the members.
A) Own the index, accept the tilt
B) Own the index, rebalance across sectors to trim the tilt
C) Pick sector weights on purpose
A, B, or C?
