Are there any published accounts of what the atmosphere between the two brothers was like in the heya during the Wakanohana-Takanohana era?

I know that the great family rift happened after the passing of their father but during their active careers, what was life like in the stable? Was it a bitter or just friendly rivalry between the two? I can’t imagine what the dynamics must have been.
