Is genuine connection really enough to make a relationship work?

It all started with me being bored on my daily life and started installing bumble. I had matched with this person called Jun. He is good with words because maybe because he is a foreigner. I’ve talked to him for days before I actually ended the relationship or whatever you call it? Situationship? Nope labeless. We enjoyed each others company, mixed flirting and life. Talk about what we do that day and all. So it felt like it was a genuine connection. It made my heart warm that you share the same values with someone (maybe because he was also in the healthcare?) But when the distance between us was brought up, I knew he was disappointed ( I am too 😔). Last day of talking came and I ask him if should we continue what we were doing or should we end it at once? And he answered very vague that he wanted a relationship. I thought to myself that maybe he wanted a relationship but not with me because of the distance and I unmatched him on bumble and forever deleted my account. ☹️ What is me? Did I read it wrong? Or is it the miscommunication? It has been a few days now and it’s been on my mind because of the what ifs in life. Thoughts on this?
