I just upgraded to a 5070ti and my primary use will be VR on the Steam Frame 2160x2160 per eye. I currently have a i7 8700k which is my bottle neck, particularly on CPU heavy simulators. I would like to upgrade my CPU but can't justify the cost of moving to ddr5 ram (I need 64gb for my other photography purposes).

In order to stay on ddr4, Im looking at moving to a Ryzen 7 5800x3d so that I only need to purchase the CPU and a new Motherboard and I can keep my 64gb ddr4 ram. Is this a worthy upgrade somewhat future proof? Are there any other things I should consider or better routes to take?

Im curious how bad I am bottlenecked with this setup. Im planning on upgrading to the Steam Frame (2160x2160 per eye) and I will probably supersample it by 120% or so if i can. I just ordered a 5070ti and know I will need to upgrade my cpu eventually, but just can't justify the cost with the RAM prices.

Note I do have a slight overclock on the cpu with liquid cooling.

Bottle neck calculating sites say there is not much of a bottle neck with this combo for 4k gaming. I think most VR is more GPU demanding but I need some educated opinions.

I am planning on upgrading from the valve index to the Steam Frame, which has double the pixels. I currently run the Index on a 2080ti. To get the same performance on the Steam frame would I need to buy a card with a 100% increase on performance than the 2080ti? Trying to decide between the 5070ti and the 5080. Is there something else to the equation I'm not considering? (Outside of the possibility for foveated rendering as im not sure many titles support that right now.)
