Are gaming sound cards actually a thing anymore?

Hey folks,

I'm not building a PC since a while, but now, I’m upgrading my setup mainly for FPS games and streaming (OBS and stuff).

Most people talk about DACs/headphone amps now, and I'm kind of an audiophile, but do gamers still use sound cards?

I mostly play Counter-Strike 2/ COD and Battlefield, and care a lot about footsteps and positioning with my IEMs and some headphones I has.

I'm curious what everyone’s using these days, I remember the Creative Sound blaster and Audigy days.

Planning on upgrading my current system. Is DDR4 still worth it?

Hey guys with a budget of about 500€ (for now 😅) I am planning to upgrade my set-up which I mainly use for CAD (Solidworks/Blender/Slicer). Once a week I am also playing games with a couple of friends.

My current setup:

- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X (8C/16T)

- CPU Cooler: Enermax Air Cooler

- Motherboard: Gigabyte B550M S2H (Micro-ATX)

- RAM: 32 GB DDR4-2666 (2x 8GB)

- GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT

- Storage 1: WD Black SN770 (NVMe SSD)

- Storage 2: Crucial BX500 (SATA SSD)

- Case: Corsair 275R Airflow (Black)

Please let me know what you would suggest. The reason is, that Solidworks easily reaches its boundaries and makes designing stuff annoying.

Thank you 🙏🏼

PS: I live in Germany if that's important.

MC bundle for office work - 9600x 16GB or 9700x 32GB for $100 more?

I know I'm over thinking this, but I need help deciding on a MicroCenter bundle for office/productivity work. Video calls, Excel, Powerpoint, 100 Chrome tabs...

Do I go with the $399 9600x 16GB -OR- $499 9700x 32GB?

The current cost of RAM has me wondering if the 9700x 32GB bundle for $100 more is a better buy. I realize both are overkill in this situation but I want to put this machine into use for the next 10 years and not think about it again. I thought about going with one of the lower cost AM4/DDR4 bundles but I think I'd like to stick with newer hardware. Any suggestions?

build upgrade inquiry

Hi all, currently my pc is about 6 years old atp, and I'm looking to upgrade it to primarily play borderlands 4 and some other demanding titles

cpu: 2700x

gpu: 2070 super fe

cooler: kraken 280 mm aio

ram: corsair vengenace (3600) 2x8

mobo: rog strix x470f

psu: corsair rm 750/850 (need to double check, but probably 850)

ssd: intel 1 tb 660p nvme

What is the most effective way for me to upgrade my build? I have a budget of around $600-$800, and I'm looking to buy a 1440p monitor. I'm open to new and used parts as well, any suggestions?

Sanity Check: Is 1440p QD-OLED text fringing a dealbreaker for someone who strictly wants "Apple Retina/XDR" clarity? (G6 2K vs G8 4K)

Hey everyone,

I’m currently building a high-end workstation and gaming rig (powered by an RTX 5060 Ti 16GB) and I’m facing a major display dilemma.

My daily drivers are my iPad Pro M5 and my MacBook Pro. I am absolutely obsessed with their display quality—the ink-deep blacks, the vibrant color pop, the premium glossy-like finish, and the razor-sharp text clarity of the Retina/XDR panels. I'm upgrading from an old Dell U2515H (IPS), and I need my new PC monitor to provide that same level of "visual perfection."

I'm stuck between two options:

  • Samsung Odyssey OLED G6 (1440p / 360Hz)
  • Samsung Odyssey OLED G8 (4K / 240Hz)

I’ve seen some 1440p QD-OLEDs in person, and the text fringing (due to the triangular subpixel layout) and the general "softness" compared to my Apple devices were a huge turn-off. I’m worried that spending money on the G6 will lead to buyer's remorse because it won't match the crispness of my Apple hardware.

My questions to the community:

  1. To get that "Apple-like" richness, contrast, and clarity, is the 4K G8 mandatory? Or is there any way to make the 1440p G6 feel as premium and sharp?
  2. For someone who works in engineering and media editing (where font sharpness and color accuracy matter as much as gaming), is the text fringing on 1440p models truly a dealbreaker compared to 4K OLED?
  3. Am I chasing a ghost? Is there ANY PC monitor that actually matches the "glossy, punchy, crisp" look of an Apple display, or will I always feel like I'm stepping down in visual quality moving to a PC monitor?

I don't mind sacrificing the extra Hz of the G6 for the 4K resolution of the G8, and I plan to use DLSS for gaming. I just want to know if the G8 is the only way to avoid the "blurry text/corner sharpness" trap.

Any advice from people who have made this transition from Mac/iPad to high-end PC OLEDs would be a lifesaver. Thanks!

Need Help Deciding On An Upgrade Versus Full New Build

Hello, I built my first PC back at the start of 2020. At the time I was pretty deep into the building community, but since that build I haven't kept up as much as I'd like, therefore I'm very very rusty on the current PC landscape.

My question is, my current rig is starting to show age quite a bit with gaming and I'm wanting to know if (based on my build below) if there would be some easy upgrades I could add to the PC to help performance or if you think that it's to the point of needing a complete rehaul. Any advice would be great.

Budget: $1k, USD, US

Parts:

2400 MHz 16GB RAM

AMD Ryzen 5 2600x Six-Core 3.6ghz

AMD Radeon 5600xt 6gb

Asus ROG Strix B450-F Gaming Motherboard

(I have a small case for context)

EVGA 600 Bronze PS

What is “overkill” in terms of a Pc?

I’m picking out parts to build my first Pc. I was looking at the RAM Sticks and saw 2x16 for 32gb or I could do 4x8 for 32gb. Is it better to have more ram to distribute power? I’ve seen it in this old YouTube video a while ago.

Edit: My friend told me having 4 ram sticks would be too much. He plays a lot of Pc games, but I want to make sure.

CPU: 9800x3d or 9850x3d for a SFF build?

I’m building my first ever small-form-factor PC this weekend, and the last decision I need to make is the CPU.

I know the 9850 performs better, while the 9800 is more efficient and runs cooler.

How have people found the 9850 in SFF builds? Does it require extra careful thermal management above and beyond the 9800?

Case: nCase M3 Grater
PSU: Corsair SF1000
CPU: 9800x3d or 9850x3d
GPU: ASUS ROG Astral RTX 5080 OC
MB: ASUS ROG Strix B850-I
Ram: Kingston Fury 64GB (2x32) CL30
SSD: Samsung 9100 Pro 4TB
Cooler: Noctua NH-D15 G2
Fans: 3x Noctua 140, 1x Noctua 120 (Rear intake, top and front exhaust)

Pcie backplate is too tall

Awhile back my graphics card died (radeon challenger 5500xt) i recently got a new one (radeon challenger 7600) my problem now lies in my pc case when I put the new graphics card in it wasnt clicking i then noticed that the top of the backplate area is stopping it from going in any further as the plate on the graphics card is at that point fully lined up with the top of the backplates I dont know of any other solution then to use a different pc case i think my current one is low profile so I figured id try my luck here and see what you all might have to say

Should I buy an SSD now or wait it out?

Pretty much as the title says. I’m seeking an M.2 NVMe internal storage drive, but the prices have skyrocketed. I’m a little upset I didn’t foresee this happening. Do we think prices will stay relatively high and stagnant? Maybe get significantly higher like with RAM, which has just continued to get more expensive?

Buy the Arctic liquid freezer iii pro 360 ARGB?

I want to buy this cooler, but I'm worried the pump might fail. I had an Antec Symphony 360 ARGB cooler, and its pump's cooling efficiency dropped significantly in just five months. Is this cooler any good, or will the same thing happen?

I have a ryzen 5 7600, and i know this cooler is an overkill, but i'm buying it for upgradability in the future, and i like my pc to be as silent as possible.

Gpu upgrades suggestions

Hi guys! I am considering upgrading my gpu. I've found a good deal for a 3070 gpu, my question then is: will I be fine with my current psu? Finding a budget gpu replacement is already very difficult, adding the cost of another psu will be too much, I fear. My goal is to play smoothly in 1080p with medium-high settings, recent games included.

Here my current configuration: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/pYQ6rG

Thank you very much!

Thoughts on Specs and Price?

Shopping marketplace for my first gaming PC! I know practically nothing about components and what makes a solid build. Here’s one I stumbled across, any thoughts? I know it has to be decently powerful based on the price.

$1900 (sounds open to negotiate)

CPU / Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 7700X (8-Core, up to 4.5 GHz shown)
GPU / Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 — 12GB VRAM
RAM / Memory: 32GB DDR5 RAM @ 4800 MT/s
Storage: 1TB SSD
Motherboard: Gigabyte B650 Gaming X AX V2
Operating System: 64-bit Windows
Wi-Fi: Built into motherboard (AX = Wi-Fi capable)

Thanks in advance for the help!

Is it possible to use my dad's old hard drive on my new computer?

I recently found my dad's old pc and asked if i could use his harddrive for extra storage. He agreed but when I connected it to my computer (via SATA) it didn't appear. It isn't showing in disk management or device manager.
