Replaying Nine Sols 1 and a half year later / Easier and harder than I remember

Also better and worse than I remember

I have had the itch to replay Nine Sols for quite some time and I'm on the middle of it right now (as reference and without spoilers, I just got the double jump). And the game is being easier and harder, better and worse, than I remember (or than it was on my first playthrough).

Starting with the "easier": I am having a breeze against the big bosses, the Sols. I'm barely dying a couple of times per boss, and I remember close to 0 of the fights of my previous run. On the first run process was like: a few dozen tries of "that sh*t is impossible", a few dozen tries of "ey, I'm understanding the fight" and finally a "I barely managed to beat it". Now on the first try I might get easily destroyed, then 1 or 2 tries to get the hang of the fight, and at the 3rd or 4th try clear it almost hitless.

As reference against the boss for the double jump, that was a quite big blocking point on my first run, and yesterday evening I beat her on 4 tries, clearing the first (of course) and second phase completely hitless and getting only hit twice on the third one. I don't know if I still keep some muscle memory, I'm reading better the fights...

But then, it is also "harder": a lot of the mid bosses are giving me a lot of trouble. As example: the boss before finding the apemen again killed me at least 10 times, when I remember clearing this full area without any issue of my first try. Also, a lot of the levels and normal enemies are giving me plenty of problems: I am unable to parry the "super-archers" or consistently perfect parry the guards with the "fans" that do a 3-4 hit combo; I get hit by plenty of environmental damage, specially in the factory area (I died way too many times here)...

Going to the "better" than I remember: the exploration, platforming and level design, while it is not the best part of the game, is way better than I remember. On my memory it was very mid, but now I am enjoying it a lot and the traversal is quite fun. Sure, it is behind some of the platform oriented games, but still good enough.

And for the "worse": I feel the game is simpler than I remember. Maybe cause I am having an easier time I can see more what the game does or does not. Given how combat focus the game is, it is too dependent on 1 single mechanic, with not much to influence any other part of the gameplay. The skills and jades have minimal impact on how the game plays, and except for the first jade you get, there is nothing to influence how the enemies move or react.

Now I will be very unfair and I will compare it with the most obvious game to compare, that comes from a way bigger and fully stablished company, Sekiro. There you have plenty of tools to impede your enemies movements and actions but, more important, the enemies react to your attacks: they block, parry and counter like you do. And this is something I am missing a lot here. Would add a lot of complexity and fun to be able to modify enemy patters with your own attacks.

Nevertheless, this is still one of my favorite games ever and I can't wait to get to the final boss.

Unable to run any romhack version of PS2

So i downloaded tje improvement patched version and run it with GenplusDroid on android and I think the hack is mot working. I tried patching it myself and also no luck.

I stll get the red flick when I get attacked and get the camera moving when I'm close to the border of the screen. Also not surr if I'm getting the increased exp and meseta values...

Am I dumb?

Great game with a reverse difficulty spike

Yesterday I finally finished my first full run on Returnal (till the credits roll, so now going to Act 3) and it's really a reversed game.

First biome took me forever and barely managed to finish it after dying 5-6 times to the final boss and thinking the game was overly complicated. Then I proceed to clean biome 2 in 2 tries for the level and 2 tries for the boss. Then I steamrolled the rest of the game.

Biome 3 was a breeze, clearing it completely, boss included, on 1 try.

Seeing how I >!lost all my progress!< at the start of Act 2 and after a couple of deaths and unlocks, I got pissed and did a few runs on the Tower. This let me unlock so many weapon skills and improve my personal skill so much, I proceeded to clean the full act 2 on the next try, without even breaking a sweat.

Now I am replaying the levels to get all the stuff needed for the true ending and biome 1 is still the hardest, by far (at least I can always beat the boss without troubles). I think why this feels so hard is cause you already get all possible shenanigans of the game, with some very difficult rooms, some very strong elites, swarms of enemies... while you barely have any usable weapon cause everything is only with 1 modifier. As soon as you get 2 ok-ish modifiers on a weapon you like, the game gets way easier. Get a third one and the game is a piece of cake.

Give me a Rot Lobber with explosive rot and I will clean anything. Give me a Thermo Launcher with Full Auto and I will destroy everything!

TLDR: your power increases much faster than the challenge and the game has a reversed difficulty curve.

About to have my first run on TO LUCT (PSP version) - Original or One Vision

As per title, will have my first run on the game, and I have been reading about the One Vision mode.

For a first time, do you recommend the original version or go directly with the modded one?

Thanks.

Just finished rewatching the anime and I think it needs an extra episode

Yesterday evening I finished the anime for the 2nd time (after plenty of years) and I think it needs 1 extra episode.

I love the slice of life parts of the shonen, so I would love to see at least an extra episode of what people is doing after Yusuke comes back. On the last episode we see everyone else life, but I want to know how Yusuke adapts again to the human world and what does he do. No fights, no stakes, no dangers... just Yusuke being human again.

New to the genre: what to read?

I am completely new to the LitRPG genre and got into it due to the never-ending recommendations of Dungeon Crawler Carl... and I loved it. So I want to get more into it and I ask:

Recommendations of books to initiate into the genre? I still don't know the subgenres, or authors or stereotypes, so can't offer more info my expectations. Generally I like "hard magic" systems, so I assume this would be quite on that direction.

Thanks!

DBZ being available before OG GB?

Whenever I see posts about DBZ before OG DB, I wonder how usual was that? Was only a US thing?

In Spain, series started with the OG DB, so I grow up watching kid Goku grow up, so feels weird when so many people watch it on the opposite order (or didn't watch OG DB at all!!!!).

Dragon Quest was always dark

I don't understand this that a dark and mature tone did not suit DQ games...

Did you guys played the games? Did you talked to the NPCs? Did you paid attention to what was happening?

From small stories of the characters, to your best friend being assassinated in front of you in 4, to the MC being a freaking slave for several years in 5, to all act 2 of XI!

DQ was always dark on it's thematic and stories even if is bright and colorful.
