What to do dealing with a deranged and dangerous local
I'm going to keep this as vague as possible since the deranged person knows where I live and has a history of returning to their previous residences and getting detained by police. I am in BC.
Long story short, I had a recent living situation where someone moved in with mental health and addiction issues. Despite much effort, things ended with this person trying to force their way into a sperate, outside access bedroom in the middle of the night. Police were called and in the following days this person was eventually forced to move out. Police initially recommended a mischief charge (video/audio evidence), but was just informed they are not proceeding with charges as it is deemed "not in the public interest".
That was where I thought I was going to leave it, but I was just tracked down and contacted by the owner of this persons new rental, and sadly, the abusive and dangerous behavior has continued, except now the next victim is an elderly person that lives otherwise alone and seems rightfully upset and scared for their safety. I advised them to call police, to keep a log of interactions etc, but I know from experience it was little help and ultimately the shit hit the fan so to speak.
Anyone out there willing to offer advice on what to do? Should I press police and push for charges? Any advice on how best to do that? I don't want to post publicly with this deranged person's name and details as she would likely seek vengeance from someone, but should I for the sake of future victims? Would that end with this deranged person being unable to find housing and becoming homeless or harming themselves or others? Obviously, this deranged individual needs mental help and rehab, but their delusions are complete and they refuse any accountability or help with their behavior. Once they lose control of the scenario, they move on to their next dwelling and victim. I know police and the legal system more broadly is bad at helping in these cases and the spiral of abuse goes on, leading to preventable tragedy (including for this deranged person).
I tried speaking to a law firm for general advice and possibly a protection order, but they cancelled the appointment and recommended to deal with police. I don't know what to do, but I'm afraid for this new victim, and know there are other victims in the past. Once this current living scenario ends they will move onto their next dwelling, where they initially mask as a kind person who is a victim themselves in order to get housing and the cycle of abuse continues.
What else is there to do in such a scenario? What would you do if this new victim was your mother or grandmother? It's heartbreaking.
