Deposit on low income

Hi everyone, Hope this is ok.

I’m hoping someone might be able to give us some advice because we’re feeling a bit stuck.

Me and my partner are looking to move after being on the council housing waiting list for around 5 years. We’ve reached the point where we feel we need to look at other options, as our current home is no longer suitable for us.

The main thing stopping us from looking at private rentals is the upfront cost, especially the deposit. We are on a low income due to my partner being disabled and me being his carer, so we don’t have a large amount of money saved up for a deposit.

We are looking at mid-market rent and housing associations as well, but we don’t want to rule out other options if there are ways to make moving possible.

Does anyone know if there is any help available with rental deposits when you’re on a low income in Scotland? Or any advice on where we could look?

Please no judgement — we’re genuinely just trying to find a way forward and we’re feeling a bit stuck on what to do next. Any advice would be really appreciated ❤️

Claiming as a Couple

Hi everyone,

I'm just looking for a bit of advice because I'm stressing myself out over this.

My partner is already on Universal Credit and gets LCWRA. He lives in a council flat, and I'm planning on moving in with him as I care for him well over 35 hours a week anyway, so it just makes more sense for us to live together.

I'm currently on ESA (still in the assessment phase), so I'm mostly trying to understand what happens once I move in.

I'm really worried about his UC. He gets paid twice a month, and I'm scared that changing from a single claim to a joint claim could stop his payments or leave us without money for weeks.

Has anyone been through this? I'd really appreciate it if someone could explain the process in simple terms.

Things I'm wondering are:

  • Do we report that I've moved in first, or do I need to make a UC claim first?
  • Does his UC carry on while it's being changed to a joint claim, or is there a gap?
  • Can I report that I'm his carer (I care for him over 35 hours a week)?
  • Did anything unexpected happen that you wish you'd known beforehand?
  • I would also like to close my new style ESA is This allowed? Im not sure how to go about it.

I'm probably overthinking it, but I just want to make sure we don't accidentally mess up his claim.

Thanks in advance! 😊

Joint Claim

Hi, I’m looking for some advice please.

My boyfriend and I are looking at making a joint Universal Credit claim as I’m planning to move in with him and I care for him.

He currently gets Universal Credit with LCWRA and housing costs included. He also gets Adult Disability Payment, so I believe I would qualify as his carer as I care for him 35+ hours a week.

At the moment, I receive New Style ESA due to my own health conditions. I’m confused about whether I should stay on New Style ESA when we claim UC together, or whether I can/should close my ESA claim and just be on the joint UC claim as his carer.

My questions are:

Can I get the UC carer element while also receiving New Style ESA?

Would my New Style ESA simply be deducted from our joint UC payment?

Would it be better to keep my New Style ESA claim open, or close it when joining his UC claim?

Would me claiming as his carer affect his LCWRA element or ADP in any way?

Would I still need to attend UC appointments if I’m his carer?

Any advice would be really appreciated as I’m finding it all confusing and don’t want to accidentally mess up either of our claims.

I am looking for some advice i have been on LCW for around 3 years but my health got worse so i put in for a reassessment 2 years ago and have been awarded LCWRA last month. i haven't been handing fit notes in as no one told me i had to as i was on LCW.

I now get the extra money but didn't get any back dated money should i have? i feel like i should as i was already on LCW before but not sure if I am wrong. ive seen people saying you don't need to hand fit notes in on LCW so confused if i would get the backdated money or not

Hope that makes sense, TIA! 😄
