Did I screw up and did they notice?
For background, I am a lesbian, currently married to another lesbian, but my ex-husband was a transman. I like to think of myself as very accepting and inclusive, and always want to be a safe place for people.
We had a contractor in today that did great work. She was very kind and communicative and she taught me a ton. She had a male apprentice with her so collectively I would just says “you guys are doing often”. Yes, I know I should be better with my language in general; it’s a work in progress.
Anyway after they left my wife commented about how we’ve had good luck getting LGBT contractors lately (which is true, and I love it). But I was confused - what LGBT contractors did we have today? My wife points out that the contractor was a transwoman. And it turns out she was.
So I feel HORRIBLE that I kept just saying “guys” so casually the whole time not even realizing and am so worried that she thought that I was purposely misgendering her.
I immediately went online to give them a good review to the business and specifically mentioned her with she/her pronouns in hopes that she will see it and realize I wasn’t trying to be an asshole, just ignorant. Cry.
If you’ve been in this type of situation, did you assume that the person was just using ‘guys’ in a gender-neutral way, or did I probably offend her? She didn’t outwardly appear offended but I feel so guilty now.
