Can anyone explain the logic on the right? The dark red? cat would not need to be on the top right. The logic explained was about putting the green cat in the box.

Is there a way to combine or exchange common items to get a higher value items like rare or purple items? I'm currently upgrading items that I'm never going to use. I'd like to use my time more wisely, but there might not be a way.
