Friendly warning...hotdogs can spike you

For my fellow American GD moms celebrating the fourth. I did not realize hotdogs (plain) even if they're all "beef" can have added sugars which can spike you. It wasn't too high and a few squats brought me in range in 10 minutes but just wanted to give a heads up because I was clueless.

Preauthorization denial of continuous glucose monitor for gestational diabetes but Cigna policy states otherwise

Hi all!

Hoping for some perspective. Essentially, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes a week or so ago and I asked my Maternal Fetal Medicine doctor to prescribe me a continuous glucose monitor to help me track trends/particularly my fasting sugars. I was told by my pharmacy (CVS) that my insurance (Cigna) required preauthorization of coverage so I asked my Dr to provide it.

He did and I found out yesterday the preauthorization was denied and the reason given was Cigna does not approve CGMs for gestational diabetes patients bc it's experimental.

What doesnt make sense and has me confused is their Preauthorization policy on their website specifically says they cover CGMs (Dexcom G7) for FDA approved individuals and under that is the category of pregnant individuals who have gestational diabetes.

I also have it on good authority that several others who have Cigna and GD have had their CGMs covered. I've tried speaking to Cigna reps to understand why their policy contraindicates their coverage and was basically told they cannot speak to it and recommended that my dr do a peer to peer review which wouldnt make sense because if the reason for the denial was they just dont cover for GD then there's nothing else the doctor would be able to say to get it covered and again their policy states otherwise and others have gotten it covered so it doesnt make any sense.

I truly feel at a loss and like I am playing a game of telephone between insurance, provider and pharmacy and it's driving me mad.

Attaching Cigna preauthorization here. MFM Nurse also confirmed all the denial said was that Cigna does not approve CGMs for GD patients bc it is experimental.

TIA!

Anyone have issues getting their CGM covered by insurance?

Hi all! I know quite a few folks have posted about using a CGM to spot trends for their GD. I am a two time GD pregnant mom and since i already have an old fashioned glucometer I was hoping I could get a CGM specifically to spot trends and for my fasting numbers. I was told I needed preauthorization for tr Dexcom 7 and my insurance (Cigna) would review and just heard back they denied it.

Any advice or experience getting them to reverse the denial or with Cigna specifically? If not, does anyone have suggestions for coupons or rebates that make the cost not 300 dollars a month haha?

TIA!

Second pregnancy and getting tested for GD at 16 weeks vs 28

Hi everyone! For those who had GD in their last pregnancy and are currently expecting did you get tested earlier vs the 28 week timeframe and is it possible to not have GD at 16 weeks when tested but have it/get it later? I know it sounds weird but this pregnancy thus far (officially in second trimester this week) I don't feel like I have GD symptoms (yet) aka the tiredness after carby meals, palpatations, water tasting like candy etc and just wondering if it's just too soon to tell or if it's a sign this round might be different. Either way, I have accepted it haha just curious!

Hi! I am based in New York and I have employer based healthcare. I had a recent appointment with a certified genetic counselor as I am expecting and will be over the age of 35 at delivery. At no point did I interact with, meet, or have an MD review my charts etc. and yet in checking my claims I realized the name of the individual listed did not match the name of the genetic counselor I spoke with. I searched and saw that he is an MD at the practice. I imagine that the cost of meet with him is higher given he's a doctor than the counselor I met with and on principle I find it to be unethical from a record keeping perspective to have someone listed as the billed provider when I never met them or saw them before. When I spoke to my insurance (Cigna) the representative I spoke with said that the decision to bill under another medical provider is at the discretion of the practice and basically if that's their policy it is what is is. I find this bizarre so curious if anyone has any insight into this? I was saying to the rep on the phone it's like flying economy and getting charged for a business class ticket after the fact. Any experience or insights would be welcome! TIA.

Hi everyone! I had GD with my first pregnancy and am currently expecting my second and in first trimester. I'm already anticipating getting GD bc I know the likelihood increases with each pregnancy. My A1C taken a few weeks ago we well within the normal range. And with my first pregnancy I was able to stay diet controlled. I only had issues with my fasting numbers which liked to stay around the low 90s so I had to get creative. I know the psyllium husk is really great at stabilizing blood sugar bc of its fiber content and helpful for taking before a meal however, I dont know if you can take it while pregnant? The back of the bag says the standard "if you're pregnant and nursing" which I feel like most packaged goods say. Before asking my doctors for their insight I wanted to see if anyone has had experience using it here as a means of controlling the GD. Thanks in advance!
