Follow up after merit pool

Hi all

Just curious to know if any former merit pool candidates were able to secure a position after emailing the recruitment team to express their interest, despite not receiving an offer in the 1st or 2nd rounds?

Keen to hear if anyone has had any luck with this approach!

Made friends? Ex - uni goers

People who’ve already graduated - Did anyone that didn’t live on campus and didn’t go to school in Sydney manage to make friends at uni over the 3/4 yrs ?
Like close friend/s that you hang out with after uni now ?
I feel like unless you’re good looking and someone pity’s you enough to make you their friend, it’s impossible to make any friends.

Using merit pool for other similar roles

Hi all, I currently in merit pool for one of the grad stream for 2027 and was wondering if I could reach out to contact officers for APS3/4 type roles on APS jobs website if I do not get an offer ? Or can they not pull me out of the merit pool and is it strictly for grad program only? Thanks

unranked merit pool ?

Hi all
can anyone shed light on unranked merit pool? I’ve recently made it to one for a grad program stream and was wondering if it’s truly UNRANKED or is actually internally RANKED in someway , because otherwise it would be a lotto pick for us that made it to merit pool (which would be more than the positions available ~50 spot for 2027 for my stream per recruiter) .thanks

Grad Merit pool & matching process

Hi all

I recently got placed in merit pool (unranked) for one of the 2027 grad streams and also did my top 5 agency selection. my question is whether the matching process is on a first come first serve basis (as in whoever submits their preference quicker gets on top of the pile) or only after the deadline (2wks from email) for submitting preferences for all candidates?

thanks

Merit pools - Grad streams vs Normal vacancies

Hi all

is the merit pool for grads treated differently to merit pool for normal job vacancies ? as in more chance of getting an offer for the grad merit pool because all the candidates are placed in merit pool first, then only offers, as opposed to normal jobs where the best candidate gets the offer whilst the 2nd best gets the merit pool?

thanks.

Accounting Recruiter Recommendations in Sydney?

Hi all

Just wanted to ask if anyone has had good experiences with accounting recruiters/agencies in Sydney. I’ve been job hunting for the last 6 months and while I’ve been landing interviews, I haven’t been able to secure an offer yet, so I was hoping to speak with a recruiter to get their perspective on my situation and the current market.

I tried reaching out to Richard Lloyd Recruitment today since they came up first on Google, but my calls kept going to voicemail.

Would really appreciate if anyone could recommend a good recruiter/agency or even share a Google link/contact I could reach out to.

Thanks everyone.

Hi all, I’ve been job hunting since November last yr (about 6 months now) and I’m starting to feel pretty stuck.

So far: 111 applications (as of today) —> 10 interviews (last one was 2 weeks ago) —> 9 rejections (2 grad roles+7 normal)

Background: BCom(Accounting), 2 years in public accounting, small firm +6 months at Big 4 (tax)

I left Big 4 because I realised tax wasn’t for me, and since then I’ve been trying to move into something broader within accounting but no luck so far.

At this point I’m wondering:

Is it worth speaking to a recruiter?
Should I keep pushing for accounting roles? Or is it just the market in 2026?
Or is it time to pivot into something adjacent?

If you were in my position, what would you do?

Feeling pretty stuck after 6 months of this.

Appreciate any advice.
