Title: Non-EU doctor with EU degree & C1 Dutch — Advice on Occupational Med, GP, or Psychiatry in NL & BE?

Hi everyone,

I’m a non-EU citizen who graduated from an EU medical university 2 years ago. I have C1- Dutch and am eligible for medical registration in both Belgium and the Netherlands.

I haven’t worked full-time clinical years yet, but I'm about to complete 2 years of Occupational Medicine training in another EU country. (LFOM)

Quick Questions:

  1. Occupational Medicine (Bedrijfsgeneeskunde/ *Arbeidsgeneeskunde):
    • Is it realistic to work as an ANIOS Bedrijfsgeneeskunde at an Arbodienst in NL or in Belgium, and will they support visa sponsorship and entry into the formal 4-year residency (AIOS)?
    • How is the job market in Belgium/ Nederland for Arbeidsgeneeskunde?
  2. Psychiatry :
    • I have no direct clinical experience in psychiatry. If I do an observership (meeloopstage), what are my chances of landing an ANIOS Psychiatrie job in NL or BE, and later transitioning into residency?
  3. General Practice (Belgium):
    • I’m preparing for the Huisartsbekwaamheidsproef in Belgium. If I pass, what are the realistic chances for a non-EU citizen to get accepted into GP training ?

Thanks for any insights or shared experiences!

ADHD and increased irritability/impulsivity in my 30s?

Over the past 3 to 4 years (after turning 30), I have started becoming extremely irritable. Honestly, I was even calmer during my teenage years!

My older brother and I have completely opposite personalities, so we constantly clash. Small things blow up into huge arguments. In the moment, I just can't let go of my stubbornness. It feels completely normal to me right then, but I regret it afterward. During the argument, my brain kind of freezes, and whatever I'm doing feels justified.

To make matters worse:

  • He is also under a lot of stress lately and is very sensitive.
  • He never forgets anything. Even if I speak without thinking, he holds onto it and throws it back in my face for days.

The hardest part is that about 10 minutes after an argument, I completely calm down, but he stays angry and holds a grudge for days.

How can I calm down faster? How do I reduce this impatience and impulsivity? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Im pretty sure that I have inattentive adhd but suspect also with autism.

Hello, I am a 33-year-old female. I have felt like an outsider—the 'weird one'—my whole life. For a long time, I thought I was just introverted, asocial, depressed, lazy, forgetful, and naive. I used to believe that to have ADHD, you had to be hyperactive, but I am the complete opposite. I spend my days in a quiet, dark room playing video games and watching streams.

It was only after graduation that I realized there might be something more going on. I struggled to find a job—not because there were no jobs available, but because I found it overwhelming to prepare a CV, submit applications, and do research. I hate writing emails and used to ignore them entirely, though thankfully I now use AI to help me. I have missed deadlines and made very big mistakes that felt life-altering. My family saved me; my siblings help me with everything. I didn't even have the courage to apply to a good university, so my brother applied for me, and I surprisingly graduated without major issues. While all my friends are working and having kids, here I am, playing games.

Deep down, there is a voice and a desire in me to be successful, but I feel mentally paralyzed. People have asked if I am okay during exams, job applications, or even at the hairdresser. My mind goes completely empty. I am not actually scared of exams—I know I can pass on retakes, and I’m usually the one telling my colleagues, 'Don't worry, we have more chances.' But my body overreacts: my hands shake, my head shakes, I get brain fog, and I can't find words.

I want to get better and be independent. I don't want my family to worry about my future. I want to see a psychiatrist, but I currently don't have health insurance, though I plan to see one in a few months. In the meantime, I can't stop thinking about what might be wrong with me or if there is a cure.

I only like going to thrift shops and grocery stores; I hate being away from home. I feel like I have no grand desires, no dreams, and no motivation. I often think, 'We are going to die anyway.' I have never wanted to marry or have kids, even though most people do, and luxury means nothing to me. I just don't understand other people. When my family made comments about others, I used to accuse them of being paranoid because I couldn't sense danger or read people properly.

I often feel like I am annoying everyone. When I go to an appointment, I immediately want to leave because I assume the lawyer or doctor wants me to go—I never know how long it is appropriate to stay somewhere. I don't like making eye contact. My siblings accuse me of never listening to them because I look around while they speak, but I am listening and can repeat everything back to them.

I have been like this since childhood. My brother literally saved my life—I used to cross the street without checking for cars, and he had to pull me back multiple times. During school breaks, I would stay in an empty classroom instead of playing outside with other kids. I could only ever get close to people who were shy or like me; around 'normal' or popular people, I feel very uncomfortable.

Most of the time, my mind feels empty. I don't make long-term plans or think ahead; I just do whatever I feel like doing in the moment, which usually means eating, sleeping, and sitting at home. But I want to get out of my bubble and stop wasting my time, my hard work, and my family's money.

I deleted my games this morning. Now I understand why I was playing them. I want to face my fears and push myself every day to get closer to a normal life and survive. I need tips from those who have succeeded, and I need hope. I am willing to push my limits.

My question is: does therapy help alongside medication? What should my expectations be? Is there a significant improvement? Any experiences and tips are welcome and very much appreciated. Please be direct, as I cannot read between the lines or understand indirect communication.

I tried supplements and vitamins; nothing helped me. I tried study supplements with caffeine, but they made my symptoms worse, and I failed an easy exam because of it. I was extremely nervous and experienced terrible brain fog. Now I realize that because of my ADHD, those supplements don't help. Coffee doesn't keep me awake at all—I can drink a cup and go straight to sleep. If I drink too much, it just gives me a racing heart.

Caution for Medical University Sofia students renting in Medical academy area

I would like to share my personal experience as a tenant in the Medical Academy area so that other students can make informed decisions.

My family rented an apartment in this area for about a year. We paid rent on time and generally had no major issues during most of the tenancy.

At the beginning, there were disagreements regarding address registration and payment method. The landlord requested additional payments related to bank transfer fees and also additional money linked to address registration / tax-related purposes. These issues were eventually discussed and partially resolved, and we continued renting.

Later, we temporarily left Bulgaria for a few months but continued paying rent because we intended to keep the apartment and return periodically. The landlord was informed of this plan in advance.

While we were away, the landlord entered the apartment during a visit related to the water meter. Afterwards, he informed us about things he observed inside the property. We were uncomfortable with this, as we had not given permission for a general inspection, and we asked that he request permission before entering in the future.

After this, communication became increasingly difficult. We received messages that we considered hostile and insulting. We were informed that our belongings would be packed and removed. Despite our request not to touch our possessions until we could collect them ourselves, our belongings were packed in our absence.

We later arranged a meeting to exchange the keys and recover our property. During this process, there was disagreement about inspecting our belongings before handing over the keys.

Following this, the landlord stated that our belongings had been moved to an unknown garage or storage location, and we were not given clear access to verify where they were stored.

As a result of the dispute, we sought legal advice and filed a complaint.

I am sharing only my personal experience. Other tenants may have had different experiences. My advice to anyone renting in Sofia is to keep all agreements in writing, clearly define rules about payments, tax-related costs, and apartment access, document all communication, and avoid leaving important personal documents or valuables in a rental property if a dispute develops.

If others have rented in this area, I would be interested in hearing about their experiences.
