Nearest snorkeling?

I live in Houston and my birthday is coming up and I’m thinking of going snorkeling to try and see some sea life. Preferably somewhere you can get to directly from the beach. Does anyone have any spots they’d recommend that’s within a half days drive? 🤿

What did I see?

Couldn’t snap a pic of the creature in time, but my wife and I were snorkeling at Kahalu’u Beach. At one point, while walking into the water I looked down into the rocks near my feet and saw a thin, deep blue creature about a foot long with a black fin wiggling its way through the rocks. I assume it’s some kind of eel, but I can’t find anything matching those colors native to Hawaii. Any clue what I saw?
