Refuting the claim that "we deserve racism because we don't stand up for other groups"
I remember seeing this lady on TikTok talk about how she didn't like that Indians faced racism but felt that it was warranted because "we don't stand up for other groups and their issues". I was completely baffled hearing that because it's simply not true in any way. South Asians have consistently stood up for and in solidarity with marginalized groups for decades. During the 1960s in the UK, we stood in solidarity with Black Britons fighting against racial discrimination and freedom fighters during the Indian independence movement also supported African-American civil rights leaders. Additionally, during the holocaust, an Indian king saved hundreds of Jewish refugees from Poland. More recently, post-9/11, activists like Deepa Iyer have stood up for Arab Americans and many Hindus and Sikhs have also worked to combat Islamophobic stereotypes that affect Muslims of all ethnic backgrounds. So please, whenever some self-hating brown person espouses some nonsense regarding us not standing up for other groups, don't believe it. We've always supported and protected marginalized groups, even centuries ago we gave shelter to Zoroastrians fleeing persecution in Iran (and that indirectly gave the world Freddie Mercury lol). We might not get credit from the world or even our own people, but it won't change the truth.
