Don’t Be Suckered Into Tipping Upscale Restaurants

Last year the steak was $89, this year $105. Why wouldn’t the owner keep raising the prices?

Previously 15% was a tip for excellent service, then it jumped to 18%, then 20%, now they want 25%. Why wouldn’t the server keep expecting more?

We are suckers to them.

A tip is voluntary. Not compulsory. Not required

I’m At Denny’s Right Now

My bill is $15 with tax and I’m leaving $4 tip.

All you morons on here that criticize me - YOU KNOW DAMN WELL 90% of these upscale restaurants aren’t worth a 20% or even 15% expected tip. You are definitely money 💰 grubbbers.

All you’re getting is a white tablecloth and candle and better quality food. The menu prices of $110 an entree cover that.

No way am I ever going to Willy-nilly tip Denny’s masked service at these expensive places just to say 😀 “I’m good.”

Proof Tipping Largely A Scam

A full-service food server was arguing with me here on Reddit saying “how dare you only tip me $4.00 you owe me at least 20% of what you spend.”

Basically if I spent $10 I owed him $2 but if Inspent $100 I owed him $20.

I shut him down. Stopped him in es tracks showing him the math.

If any full-service conservatively has 5 tables to their section with 17 seats and they work a 8 hour shift, if 80% of their section stay busy that’s around 3 covers per table per hour. If each tipped $4, with a 1 hour lunch, after 7 hours that’s $60/hour, 5 days a week, 50 weeks a year I alone and paying my share of $105,000 per year in tips.

He read this toooooooooook a looooooooponge pause arguing with me.

Then came back arguing how I have to make up for all their circumstances. Sick pay. The restaurant not being busy (not being 80% busy) on and on they went until they got tired.

Then they started baby harassing me.

The proof is in the pudding.

I’m not gonna roll out dough of 20% of a $200 bill at a highflutten restaurant just to be nice. If you want this kinda extra dough you’re gonna have to give me amazing service which isn’t happening today at expensive restaurants.

Deviance in one hand, a wad of cash in the other

I will not look at deviance and guilt in one hand, hold a wad of cash in the other and bring them together in prayer 🙏 to put a food server into Butter Brickle and Deviled Dogs.

On the show the Sopranos Phil says to Tony “who do you think’s keeping Jinny in Butter Brickle and Deviled Dogs” basically meaning funding Jinny financially.

Titans of industry generally agree that compensation of semi-skilled to low skilled workers ranges between federal minimum wages and around $30 per hour with an average of around $15/hour.

Yet, because I have the good fortune of being able to afford a Ferrari (eating at a fancy restaurant costing $320/person) deviance is used against me to obligate to helping put bar tenders and food servers doing minimalistic work into Butter Brickle and Deviled Dogs??????????????

I have a maximum of $10/person tip and this is for good normal service even if my bill is $155/person the maximum I will compensate is $10/person.

Now if you want to give me real good service, dot on me, fluff my pillows, give me the royal treatment we will talk about me compensating more.

You’re not using deviance on me to get me to pay for another ticket to admittance so I can repeat put you into Butter Brickle.

You might have the vice president of Ford motor company over a deviance barrel, but you don’t have me.

Why Do Upscale Food Servers Get Angry For ZERO Tip

Isn’t $98 or $120 for a steak enough to pay? Let alone the $18 baked potato 🥔? Don’t get me started on booze. 🍸

What about your 4-step service? 1. You ready to order (wave at me when you’re ready) 2. Whichya gonna have? O yo want information? Here’s the menu back go ahead and wave at me. 3. Did you save room for dessert? 4. Here’s your check, don’t forget to tip me 30%

Bar service. I’m not gonna sit watch you shake drinks as my unique experience. So you can hat your hand at 20 floor servers for an extra $500 in addition to the fools that tipped you at the bar.

You don’t got me fooled.

Nothing Except AI and Robots will end Full-Service Tipping

It’s pretty much a waste of time to rant against full-service tipping. I eat out regularly and 99% tip between 10-30%.

A few tip 0-10% and a few tip 100-200%.

There’s an extremely popular cafe I go to. They went tipless 10 years ago. One full page on their menu highlighting how they pay living wages and benefits. Guess what?????????!! Guess

Yep, you guessed correctly. People still tip left and right. This place raised it prices to where their French grilled cheese and salad is $38. This isa $4 grilled cheese sandwich with 80% profit they are actually selling for $38 and people are ignoring the menu and still tipping.

The only thing that’s ever gonna wipe out tipping is AI and robots. You can rant all you want. I’ve even heard that they are trying to ask for a tip on these too but I believe this will fail.

The reason people are still tipping at the French cafe I know is the bribe effect. Example I witnessed if you are regularly they give you a non English speaking food server, but if you tip on top of their exorbitant prices you get better service. There’s just know what you can compete with the fact that Bill
Gates and many others can afford to tip 10 million dollars to your $1.00. Because they can, but they don’t need to tip $10,000,000.00 they can just tip 20% on $38 grilled cheese asa bribe and before you know it you’re pretending you’re rich too and back tipping at a tipless restaurant.

The worst news is when AI and robots do go into vogue we will be buying the ramican of ketchup ordered, paying for napkin, renting table time, paying for view.

We always think we can pull the wool over the rich eyes 👀 and we cannot. They are producing we are consuming and they just keep raising the prices.

I Cannot Afford To Tip For Bad Service

Look, I’ll be the first to admit I dine out regularly at restaurants charging me $100-200-300-400 a person. Service sucks.

Food servers hear this: your “are you ready to order service sucks.”

If you’re not happy with my $8 tip on $280 check I write zero. I don’t care. 🤷‍♀️

You suck. You are called tip collectors.

Guilt Tipping

It sucks. The pangs of guilt are real.

I dined for 50 minutes ata upscale steakhouse the other day. My bill was $130.

The service was almost as good asa upscale breakfast cafe for $38. I repeat “almost as good.”

For $38 breakfast I basically leave $5 tip.

Because my bill at dinner was $130 I felt compelled to leave a much larger tip for service that wasn’t even quite as good as breakfast.

I left $20 tip and I believe the bo hunk bar tender snapped the $20 bill with his finger while saying “chuuuuuuuuuuu.”

But the pangs of guilt are really the only reason I tipped.

I believe for $130 he gave me maximum of 60 words in 50 minutes. Filled my fucking iced tea cram packed with ice each time so he was pouring 4 oz of iced tea. But he did refill me 8 times. Nice touch.

If I honestly evaluate how much I wanted to leave was $4.00.
