Scandal s1e1

I literally watch scandal every few months and I just started a rewatch with s1e1(typically I start with favorite episodes and jump around).

So I just realized(mad crazy late) that when Liv goes to see the President at camp David s1e1 to discuss Amanda Tanner and she was greeted so warmly by the first lady, that Mellie knew of their affair. Based on future flashbacks the reason why Liv quit the white house was because Mellie returned the flag pin to her to give back to Fitz. And this situation was like a year after she left the white house. Idk why I never caught it before ... anyone late to that realization??? Or just me? Also did Cyrus know of the affair??? I know he says he didn't know after walking in on their kiss but the way he was looking and talking at camp David makes me wonder??? 🫣

Random thoughts ..

Do we think Fitz cheated on Mellie prior to Olivia?

How did Cyrus not pick up on the closeness of Olitz? Or do you think he did but didn't care bc they were winning?

Olivia is extremely private ... but both Huck and Steven knew about her relationship with Fitz? Huck I can understand he seemed to be her person. But Steven?

Why did Olivia need her dad out of jail in s5 to blackmail the impeachment committee? Didn't they already have access to b613 information themselves at the time??

Just a thought ...

Do you think Olivia fixed the initial election for Fitz out of love or for power?? Because we know the others had power as their main motive. But when I think about it ... I think her motivation was out of love for Fitz and to help him realize his goal/"dream".

Thoughts/Opinions?

Scandal plot holes

What were some of the worst plot holes you noticed?

The one im still confused with is: The whole Peus/Luna Vargas subplot! Maybe someone can explain to me ... but how did she bank roll the whole scheme???

Olitz thoughts

A few thoughts about Olitz ...

Shonda has stated that the premise of the show changed once the chemistry of Kerry and Tony presented itself onscreen. Their chemistry is insane and therefore Olitz was born. The way the two of them look at each onscreen and in interviews is wild! How could you not root for them to win. Fitz stayed ready to blowup his world for her. But Liv was mostly hesitant. One of my favorite episodes was when Olivia finally stood in her truth and answered YES to those reporters. She had stopped running and stopped being ashamed of her feelings for Fitz. There was no doubt in the entirety of the show that Olivia and Fitz loved each other...as toxic as it may have been. There was mutual admiration and obsession. They were friends and confidants. They practiced true forgiveness of/for one other. Even when they hated each other they loved each other. Idk of another tv couple that has as much chemistry on and off screen for this duration of time as these two. And I love that Kerry and Tony feed into the Olitz Fandom.

Olivia and Papa Pope

I love my girl Olivia and support her wrongs and her rights. But the one thing that annoyed me was her relationship with Papa Pope!

Every other season she wanted him stopped/caught/dead...but not really. I know their relationship is complicated and I'm sure there's love. But her flip-flop of wanting caught and killed but not really was so annoying.

Mellie

Mellie was probably my least favorite character on the show. I never really understood her perspective. I initially thought ok .. she's the scorned wife. Bc how could she not be with her husband literally in love and active with another woman.

BUT in s1 we find out that they have a "dead" marriage and just playing the part. That Mellie possibly had an affair of her own and that she knew about Olivia and Fitz for a while and said nothing much about it until it ended and somehow THAT was the upsetting situation because Fitz screwed the intern and a scandal broke out. Then s2 rolls around and Mellie is upset that Fitz still has feelings for Olivia(bc she's not just the mistress) and she's raising hell because Fitz didn't "come back to her"???? So then she goes on national TV and accuses Fitz of the affair but doesn't share the name because she wants to use that at a later time or because she just wanted to get Fitz attention. THEN s3 she literally BEGS Olivia to come back!!! She says to her that Fitz can't breathe without her he can't exist without her that he can't win without her and she's he's everything! Now that had to be painful to have to admit and say outloud to the "mistress". But then she acts upset and hurt when their affair restarts!!! Wtf??? Then by s4 she was assisting in saving Olivia and even encouraged going to war.

I know all the characters are multidimensional and flawed and great but Mellie just confused me! I did like her and Fitz when they weren't enemies and after they separated. I enjoyed her and Olivia having a real conversation in s5 where they both admitted that they liked that each of them was with Fitz and how they benefited from the other.

I can't be the only one that felt confused by her character though 🤔
