SNES Core slowdown (Mega Man X)

I installed OpenFPGA recently and was trying some SNES cores, and I got some really significant slowdown on Mega Man X, whenever a few too many sprites appear on screen (e.g. on the first level when you destroy the large bug robot and it has the explosion effects and drops the bridge)

As far as I can tell this isn't present on original hardware, and I couldn't find an instance of anyone else complaining about it on this page, so I wanted to check if this was a known issue and everyone has the same experience? Or if there's some issue specific to my Analogue Pocket I needed to try to fix

EDIT: Apparently it's normal on original hardware. I did try looking up some gameplay on original hardware beforehand but must have done a poor job. Thanks all :)
