started writing a one-paragraph recap for myself before every writing session and it's fixed my consistency errors almost completely
it's not for readers tho it's purely for me and before I start any session, I write myself a quick paragraph: where each major character currently is, what they know, what they don't know yet, what emotional state they're in barely takes maybe three minutes
used to rely on memory alone across a 300+ chapter serial and kept making small errors, a character reacting with surprise to something they'd already learned two arcs ago, that kind of thing that the three minute recap habit has caught at least a dozen of these before they made it into a chapter instead of after, which used to mean an awkward retroactive fix or just letting a small inconsistency stand because catching it late wasn't worth the disruption
