So, most of us are aware that most African-Americans have some degree of white/European ancestry due to antebellum relations, some consensual and some not-so.
However, does anyone know about any particular hints that point to a direct white ancestor?
I know with certainty a few white men who were the fathers of some of my ancestors, most of whom were classified as mulattoes/mixed race from the 1850 to 1920 censuses. Most of these men were apart of the families that owned my enslaved ancestors, though one of them was likely a friend of the enslaver of my 5th great-grandmother, as I’m not related to that enslaver’s family myself.
Obvious hints I came across include: (1) a death record of my 4th great-grandmother‘s brother, which revealed that his father was the brother of a woman who owned him, his mother, and his siblings; (2) DNA results that connect me and my relatives to white families who enslaved my ancestors; (3) an ancestor who owned +30 enslaved people yet only freed a mother and six of her children before his death; according to the Fairfax County VA negro register, the mother was described as “mulatto”, and one of her daughters as a “bright mulatto”.
So aside from DNA results and direct confirmation in records, does anyone knows of any other hints that points towards a named white person being an ancestor? I’m just curious.
