Happy 35th Birthday Wang Duo! From Gongzi to Nan Xuyue, the Unofficial King of Playing Doomed Beautiful Men 🎂

I feel like I can be audacious and speak my mind without thinking anyone here will misunderstand me, as everyone seems to know my reverence for the character Nan Xuyue played by Wang Duo. I was conflicted whether to do this birthday post or not because if it doesn't get a good response then I would be very sad, but I am keeping my personal insecurities aside and hoping I can do justice to an actor who has suffered (if not more, then just as much as his characters).

Wang Duo (汪铎, English name Tony), born on May 21, 1991 in Shenyang, Liaoning, turns 35 today. 184cm of pure pale skin, cheekbones and tragic destiny. He graduated from the Shenyang Conservatory of Music, which may explain why his voice sounds like that in dramas. Singer first, actor second, and you can tell.

He was a model and an aspiring singer, and he tried to get into the industry by participating in various shows. In 2012, he competed in Perfect Voice (完美声音), a music competition where his looks earned him the nickname "漫画王子" (Comic Prince). Then in 2013, he tried Super Boy (快乐男声) in both Changsha and Hangzhou, didn't get far. Then came 2014 and China's Good Man (中国好男儿). He made it to the finals, performed New Drunken Beauty (新贵妃醉酒), and won runner-up.

His singing isn't amazing, which is why instead of attracting divine beauties, he got the attention of Guo Jingming and became the first actor ever signed to Zui Culture, Guo Jingming's agency that until then had only ever signed writers. He was already known as the Comic Prince and the Korean Prince for his looks and personality. Dry humor, an animated face, and a dream to achieve big things.

He landed his first role in Yes, Mr Fashion (是!尚先生, 2016) as a supporting character. It's a must watch if anyone wants to see him NOT suffer.

Because after that? Suffering. So much suffering.

His early roles under Guo Jingming were varied, but you could already see the pattern forming.

 1. In Ice Fantasy (幻城, 2016), he played 皇柝 Huang Zhe, the loyal physician.

 2. In L.O.R.D: Legend of Ravaging Dynasties (爵迹, 2016), he was 漆拉 Qi La, canonically described as having "a face more beautiful than any woman's".

3.Then in 2017, he popped up as the transformed Zhu Bajie in Stephen Chow's Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back.

 1. He played a dark, vengeful character in Inference Notes (推理笔记) opposite Hou Minghao in the drama and Chen Duling in the movie. He was deliberately breaking away from the flower boy image.

 2. And then 2018 happened. Bloody Romance (媚者无疆). His role as 公子 Gongzi (Master) is, to this day, the performance most international fans discovered him through. The character was the secretive master of Guihua City (姽婳城): blind, physically frail, hiding in the Bamboo Listening Courtyard (听竹院), pulling strings no one knew existed. Two identities in one body: the powerless prince and the lethal strategist. Wang Duo himself described 公子 as "a powerful but pitiful man. His father killed his mother, and then he killed his father. A kid from a broken home". The original novel's author called him "the strongest pitiful person." He was cold, manipulative, heartbreaking, and Wang Duo played every contradiction without blinking.

 3. The Yin-Yang Master: Dream of Eternity (晴雅集, 2020): He played 忠行 Zhong Xing AND 鹤守月 He Shouyue. Two roles. One actor. 忠行 is the noble, aging master. 鹤守月 is his young, obsessive, snake-bonded replacement who becomes the film's most compelling villain. The name 鹤守月 literally means "Crane Guards the Moon". His祸蛇 (calamity snake) makeup took 9 hours to apply, requiring him to stay still while scales were glued on piece by piece. The aging prosthetics for 忠行 made him feel like he was dying; he texted the director saying his "life was reaching its end". Some people called 鹤守月 the most fully realized character in the entire film.

 4. A League of Nobleman (君子盟, 2023): 辜清章 Gu Qingzhang opposite Jing Boran and Song Weilong. Mysterious, haunted, gorgeous. His scenes with Liu Xueyi were cut and we never saw these two magnificent men sharing the screen together.

 5. Sword and Fairy 4 (仙剑四, 2024): Xuan Xiao AND Xuan Ying. Again. Two roles. 玄霄 is the legendary Xihe Sword Master (羲和剑宿主) who goes mad, gets frozen for 19 years, and emerges as the final boss. Red hair. Insane. Magnificent.

 6. Fangs of Fortune (2024): Zhuo Yixuan, the doomed older brother who dies before the story properly starts, and his death is the whole reason his younger brother becomes who he is.

Then came 2025, and this was his busiest year yet:

 1. The Blossoming Love (千朵桃花一世开): 南胥月 Nan Xuyue. Also plays 国师 (National Preceptor) and 天命书 (Book of Destiny). So technically three roles. Born a divine being above all three realms, destined to love someone who will never love him back. In the finale, he self-destructs his own divine aperture gazing at the woman he loves, then crumbles to ash!<. The scene had viewers sobbing.

 2. The Immortal Ascension (凡人修仙传): 王蝉 Wang Chan opposite Yang Yang.

 3. The Blemished Flaw (棕眼之谜): 曾杰 Zeng Jie. Finally something different! He played a soft-spoken ceramic artist who is actually a scheming, wife-murdering soft rice man trying to inherit his wife's entire family fortune. A complete 180 from his usual tragic romantic. Some called him the "内娱斯文败类天花板" (the ceiling for refined scum in Chinese entertainment).

 4. The Unclouded Soul (逍遥): 秉烛 Bing Zhu. A demon hunter who lost his sister to demons and leads the Flying Feather Guards (飞羽卫). And notably, a role where he doesn't die pining for the female lead.

This is where I need to state the obvious: Wang Duo is the unofficial king of playing doomed, beautiful characters who die tragically or lose everything. His filmography reads like someone's personal challenge to see how much emotional devastation one actor can cause. He has also endured a lot in his personal life to continue being an actor.

Among all of this, what I didn’t share was his struggle from 2018 to 2023. He practically had no work because all his projects were suffering due to situations with others (Tax Evasion scandal, Plagiarism Scandal, BL ban, Episode count restrictions). Instead of being dejected, he started doing eating vlogs and OOTD videos and he still has baggage over these as he thinks (due to comments) people don’t recognize him for his talent as an actor but see him as an entertainer who can just eat food. He did that to stay relevant. He carries himself with grace but this sensitive man has been deeply hurt over and over by an industry he wished to enter.

I don't want to change anyone's mind about him; I just want to celebrate him on his birthday. He is 35 today, and if his career trajectory is anything to go by, he'll be playing more devastatingly beautiful characters who make us cry or shudder with fear or maybe fall for the men he plays on-screen.

Note: A glimpse of all the characters he has ever played! This is a birthday post; please refrain from leaving negative comments on him. If possible, just share which Wang Duo role or drama first made you fall for him. Was it 公子 Gongzi? 鹤守月 He Shouyue? 南胥月 Nan Xuyue? 玄霄 Xuan Xiao? Drop it below or just leave something kind and nice. Thank you :)

520💕| In The Moonlight 🌟 Bao Shengen & Wang Hongyi. He is Buddha’s son and she claims to be his Matangi.

I did a post a couple of days ago about this drama (Living, I am Yours. Dead, my ghost is yours) since I’m currently reading the novel, so I thought I’d share one last thing for today.

For the people who have read the novel, how disappointed are you with the adaptation looking so different already? Because I’m on chapter 86 right now and the male lead only showed up around chapter 38. They met by chapter 40 and ever since then it’s just been me sitting there waiting for them to finally become lovers instead of a Dharamraja benevolently protecting his Matangi every few chapters.

For anyone unfamiliar, Matangi was a woman who shaved her head and followed Ananda, the Buddha’s cousin, after falling in love with him. Later she reaches enlightenment and gives up worldly desire altogether.

Honestly the novel has been unexpectedly interesting just for the Buddhist themes alone. I’ve been learning a lot while reading it, so if that aspect interests anyone, I’d definitely recommend checking out the source material.

But judging from the casting announcements and promotional material so far, the drama seems like it’s going in a very different direction from the novel.

520💕| Blossoms Through The Cloud 🌟Wei Zheming & Liu Xiening. From flight attendant to a pilot … modern CEO romance

I don’t think I have ever shared any clips from this drama so I thought this 520 video would be a good post to share another Blossom title.

Plot:

Ruan Si Xian was originally a flight attendant at Hengshi Airlines, hoping to become a pilot through internal recruitment. However, the company suddenly reformed, causing her to lose this opportunity.

Unwilling to accept this, Ruan Si Xian decided to find CEO Fu Mingyu but a misunderstanding occurred with supposedly having feelings towards him. Ruan Sixian’s self-esteem was wounded, and in a fit of anger, she resigned. By coincidence, Ruan Si Xian entered a flight academy to study, experiencing rigorous closed training. Three years later, she returned to Hengshi Airlines as the best pilot.

The sky was her dream, and being a captain represented responsibility. But Ruan Si Xian didn’t know that on this destined extraordinary career path, there would be a beam of light constantly by her side, protecting and guiding her.
