What are the biggest red flags when buying a used car from a private seller?
I’m putting together a simple used-car buyer checklist for a car community I’m helping with, and I wanted to ask people here first since this subreddit has a lot of real-world experience.
When you’re looking at a used car, what are the biggest red flags that make you walk away?
A few that come to mind:
- Seller avoids giving the VIN
- No maintenance records
- Title issues or “waiting on paperwork”
- Price seems way too good to be true
- Seller rushes you or refuses a pre-purchase inspection
- Mismatched paint, weird panel gaps, or signs of accident repair
- Check engine light magically “just came on”
What else would you add? Also curious what green flags make you feel more confident buying from someone.
