Is it unrealistic to want to buy a car in full and not pay a monthly payment on it?

So I’m trying to buy a used 2020 Ford fusion SE with only 46,000 miles on it and it costs $14k in the monthly payment would be around 292 bucks. I have never bought a car before but I think I’m doing my math wrong because everyone around me is saying i gotta take out a loan and i just keep thinking i don’t want to spend over $15k on a car.

Is this a good buy?

Hey everyone I’m checking out this car to buy and it seems like a good deal but I would like everyone’s opinion on this. I need a reliable car for my daily commute to school.

Seller states the oil has been changed less than 50 miles ago. Only a few cosmetic issues such as a cracked display and bubbles in the rear tints. It does have an aftermarket exhaust “borla”. Selling it due to not having any use for it as it was an extra family car.

Miles: 127,276
Trim: Grand Touring
Color: Blue Mica
Vin: JM1BN1M32H1122224

I appreciate any help!

First Time Buyer

Hi!
Thanks to the funds from my recent divorce settlement combined with the payout for my recently totaled (weather) car, I can pay cash for a new or used car well-over $40k. However, buying a ridiculous car just because I can would be stupid, so I’m won’t.
Additionally, due to my divorce being batty, my credit got pretty ruined and financing with my shitty score would cost me probably ~$10k more over time.
I need advice on how to approach this. And it shouldn’t matter, but it does down here, I’ve been shown time after time: I’m 32/F and conventionally pretty/put-together.

My question:

Do I tell the salesperson I can pay cash at a certain point in shopping or lead with it? Will I get taken advantage because of this fact or get a better deal?

Need Advice on breaking lease

Hello everyone!

my wife and I find ourselves in a financial predicament we never expected. Long story short, wife lost her job and is now staying home with the kids for a while. we need a reliable used car that fits 3 kids. problem is we have a Tacoma lease with 15 payments left (that I’m already over on miles on).

we need something reliable and cheap that’ll fit 3 kids comfortably but also need to get out of the lease. The budget cars we have in mind won’t get approved on a loan because of loan to value ratio and we can’t afford cash to just buy one. Any advice would be appreciated!

Used car market advice

Hello! I currently have a 2015 Dodge Dart Rallye with the notoriously unreliable 2.4L multiair tiger shark engine. I have about 132k on it, i’ve owned it for 3 years. Recently had an issue with overheating when driving it just an hour out of town. Got it fixed, and learned my engine burns about a quart of oil every 4k miles. My car as it sits with issues fixed is about $3500. If I burn too much oil, or get the all to common with this engine rod knock, I am sitting on about $300 in scrap (same thing happened with my last car) I have about 3k to spend on top of that if I sell now. My question is, do i look to sell now, or try to ride this car out until it dies? I feel like I am sitting on a time bomb, waiting for an issue to come up. I have been looking at 2014 civics and accords, but of course, the market on those is a bit much right now with people kinda scalping the market, but I don’t mind taking out a small loan to build credit, as I am 22 and have no credit graduating college currently. Any advice on this would be helpful. Thanks!

Second car ideas

Hello, as you can see by the title I’m looking to buy a second car I’m just not fully set on what to buy. My budget is around £9k and my current car is a Suzuki Swift 1.2, so I’m looking for something with a bit more space and ideally <10s 0-60. I’ve looked at a few like Audi A3, Seat Leon and Ford focus but any ideas or confirmations on my current ideas. Thanks.

If anyone wants to know the criteria’s I’m looking for (likely hopeful wishing for my budget):

2017 or newer
10s > 0-60
120 BHP
5 doors

Downgrade my car?

Considering a car downgrade to keep myself in a good spot financially without too much sacrifice.

Currently I drive a 2024 Hyundai sonata N line with 24k miles at a 5.75 rate
$403 monthly note

I went and looked at a 2016 Honda Civic EX with 91k miles single owner all work done at dealer. Asking $14.7k at a Toyota dealer

I went in to take a look at the Civic, looks amazing! So we talked numbers.

They matched $25k offer from carmax on a trade in so no sales tax on if I traded and I have $2500 positive equity. I can throw a little more on top as well

The payment would essentially be cut in half as well as gas and insurance. Is this a smart move to do for my finances?

Buying a Used 2015 Sierra SLT

So . I’ve been looking for a daily truck USED. I come across this 2015 GMC Sierra with over 130k miles for 21k ( I can try negotiate price since it’s a dealer)

I ran the carfax and it shows it had an engine replace . I called the company on the carfax and they said it’s true. The engine came brand new in a crate and he installed.

Here the carfax. Do you guys think this is a good buy or would you walk? or what year truck would you get instead.

It’s a 5.3 v8

But it seems like he sold it right after engine replacement

The engine shop also mention he can reach out to previous owner to see if I can speak to him about the car, and how he knows the guy and he was having trouble affording the maintenance

What do y’all overall think?

Truck had 4 Owners

2015 Scion xB, 174k miles, for $6550… thoughts?

Main, general inquiry in the title.

I’m in SW PA (where we have both body and emissions inspections) and have desperately been looking for a new-to-me vehicle for 2 months now. Most of the vehicles I’ve found in my price range (with $7k being the out-the-door cap) have either been rusted out or need major, immediate work. This one, as far as I currently know, is in decent condition and know it’s currently inspected, but have yet to see it in person; it’s over an hour away from where I live.

Currently plan on my mum driving me out there tomorrow with intent to buy, but am very anxious at this prospect because I can’t get a PPI from someone I trust before purchase. Got a PPI from my mechanic on a nearly identical xB the other day, but with 249k miles and for $4500 firm. Mechanic said that one wasn’t a good deal, considering he saw that it would need an exhaust (~$1k) within the next year, and given that plus the high miles said it was worth closer to $3500; the owner wouldn’t budge on the price. Overall though, he said the xB’s are pretty solid cars and suggested I check out the $6550 one further.

What price should I sell my Scion tC for?

In northern nj. 2012 tC with 220k miles on it. No issues. Newer tires and brakes. Passed inspection with no engine issues or check lights. One owner me. Minor cosmetic wear outside inside. One minor car accident that scratched the rear bumper. But did nothing else to the car.

2002 Toyota Corolla or 1992 dodge caravan

I have a dilemma. Had a great 2002 Toyota Corolla that had total engine failure a couple months ago and I couldn’t afford to fix it.

Then my friends offered me a free car - a 1992 dodge caravan. Driven 350k miles but new engine put in awhile back with 140k miles on it. Pretty new transmission. Engine has been well maintained and it drives well. I just flew couple states away to their place to pick it up. The problem: we just discovered the a/c compressor is broken, and my friend broke the instrument panel while repairing some other electrical. It hasn’t been driven more than 20 miles at a time in like a decade and I have a long drive home. When I get back I will have to get the a/c fixed cuz I live in Texas (so hot) and fix the instrument panel, and it’s possible other issues could arise cuz it’s been kinda just sitting around for awhile.

Other option: I say no to this van, and I buy back my 2002 Toyota Corolla. I sold it to my mechanic a couple weeks ago and he put in a JDM engine with only 60k miles on it. A/c works great, has new tires and has been well maintained cuz I was the one maintaining it the last couple years. He’s selling it for 5k.

Do I take this free dodge caravan that may cost a couple grand to fix up with no guarantee of how long it will last or leave it and spend 5k reclaiming a super reliable Toyota Corolla….perks of the caravan is it’s super cool - we put a new ceiling in, Bluetooth radio, cleaned up the whole thing. Got new seals around all the windows and new door locks. We were even talking about putting a roof rack on it. Idk I am super torn.

Curious if yall have opinions on these particular vehicles. Maybe dodge caravans are also super reliable? thanks in advance.

Vehicle Stuck By Lightning: Need Something New

My vehicle was totaled by lightning and I'm back in the market. Unfortunately, I'm a student and on a tight budget (would like to stay $10k or less, can probably stretch to $11k pre-fees if needed. If I could find something decent for $6500 or $8000 that would be even better).

'll recycle the same question that probably gets asked here often. Here's what I'm looking for:
- reliable (most important and that's really true--I don't need anything that looks even presentable, I just need dependable)
- can go up to 75mph consistently (I'm not a speeder)
- decent leg room (I'm tall. I do have kids, but back seat is not at all a must since my spouse has a car for family driving)
- snow/inclement weather capable would be nice, but I can work with anything
- really no other requirements

Given my budget, I think the Toyota/Honda tax is going to preclude me from getting a nice car from those brands. Is that right? Have also looked at VW Jetta, Subarus, Mazda 3s, maybe older Ford Ranger but I'm VERY open to suggestions.

Toyota Rav 4 or Mazda Cx-5?

So I had my heart set on a used Mazda cx-5 but it’s hard to find one with low km and good price. I know Toyota is notorious for being reliable but I heard that Mazda cx-5s are comparable. I’m just tryna determine which one is worth buying. I plan on keeping this car for probably 5 years. Can anyone who owns either cars provide any insight on their experience?

Should i get this 2019 mazda cx-3 sport

Need a car ASAP and its stressing me out. I just bought a carfax report on Etsy for $4, gonna run the vin. Then go test drive on Monday. Ive only ever had sedans (accords, inifiniti, volvo). Im going to put $3200 down,my note would be around $250/mo. Its from a dealership here in memphis, thats good, right?

I drive maybe 800 miles a month. No road trips (id rent a car if i did go more than an hour or 2 out of town). Im single,no kids,no pets, so im worried it may be too much car for me.

Thoughts? Thanks in advance.
