Britt and Glazy Recipes

I’m looking to hear others’ stories on mixing their own glazes. I have a Skutt 1027 and fire to cone 6. For efficiency I’ll make a lot of sets and repeat pieces in order to have enough to fill the kiln, glaze alike pieces the same, and do a glaze fire every 2-3 months.

I’ll usually glaze a full kiln over 2-3 sessions using 3-4 dipping glazes that I mixed myself and brush-on glazes I purchased. I absolutely hate brushing on glaze and want to expand my selection of glazes I can dip and pour.

When using a recipe from Glazy marked production or from a Britt book - does everyone do a test batch first? Does anyone just dive in and make a 2 gallon bucket? Work and life limit how much time I can spend in the studio, and I would rather spend that at the wheel than mixing test batches and doing test tiles, etc….

I know to expect differences from images from clay body and other variables, and I’m willing to accept the risk of the occasional failed batch. But I ultimately want to make sure there’s a low likelihood of damaged shelves and kiln bricks and see if others have had more successes vs. failures with these recipes.

Thanks for the advice - I love this group!
