Only direct unsubsized and grad plus loans. Do I have to consolidate for pslf?

Want to confirm that if I only have direct unsubscribed and grad plus loans that I do not need to consolidate in order to start qualifying payments for pslf

I can simply wait for the grace period to end after I graduate in may

When I make a qualifying payment, will this add time to all of my loans? I want to make sure it won’t just start counting towards forgiveness for the single largest / highest interest loan

College loans from 2012-16, paid off in 2025, med school loans 2021-2026, do i qualify for new ibr?

Hi, currently preparing my student loan strategy

I had college loans from 2012-2016 that were paid off in 2025. I took out med school loans from 2021-2026 that I am preparing a loan repayment strategy for.

I want to confirm that I only qualify for old ibr since I had loans from before 2014 that remained unpaid after 2014

Im getting mixed feedback on whether consolidating loans to waive the grace period actually saves money when pursuing PSLF.

From my understanding

If you start making payments in July 2026 based on a 2025 income of 0 as a medical student, your payments are $0 (or $10 if rap) through June 2027. Your max payment from July 2035 through June 2036 will be based on your 2034 income.

If you start making payments in December 2026, your payments are also based on 2025 income and is $0 through November 2026. Your max payment from december 2035 through November 2036 will be based on your 2034 income as well.

This is of course assuming you don’t delay taxes until October 15 , which you could do to get another year of low payments, on either plan, since recertification just requires paperwork about 35 days in advance of when your new year of payments is due.

From my understanding, you don’t actually save money by waiving the grace period, youre just done 6 months faster. This is all moot for anyone who won’t be consolidating avoid graduating in may to avoid being locked out of ibr .

Just want some clarity and if I am wrong to understand why that is

Thank you

For simplicity, it seems anyone pursuing PSLF will most likely choose an IDR of IBR vs. RAP.

It seems federal direct unsubsidized loans have a 6 month grace period while direct gradplus loans have a 6 month deferment. from my understanding, it sounds like you cannot skip this grace period unless you consolidate. the issue being that if you consolidate and that loan is approved after July 1, you are no longer eligible for IBR and have to pursue RAP.

my two questions are:

  1. is there any way for an intern starting end of june to begin qualifying payments july 1 without consolidating loans to maintain eligibility for both IBR and RAP?

  2. if i do not consolidate, and choose to wait the 6 months before starting repayment, I want to confirm that if I choose RAP, I will still be eligible for an IBR if i do not consolidate.

additional context if it matters: i have at least 9 years of residency training ahead of me, which I could easily make 10. I only qualify for old IBR, so outside of the potential uncapped payments I would have to make it my final year of payments, RAP is superior in terms of both the monthly payments and interest subsidy. What I am most concerned about is any world where RAP payments would no longer qualify for PSLF....

Hi, Im starting residency at duke in June. Seems like Wilson is a decent gym. I’ll be given parking in the Research Drive Parking Garage which is about a 20-30 min walk from the gym based on Google Maps. Anyone know if this is actually the case? Or if there is a closer parking lot I might be eligible for?

Thank you

Going into a residency that will require two research years. Have a federal loan burden approaching 500k. Plan to pursue pslf but also hope to moonlight a ton. Curious what the max people have heard of people earning is. I figure if you make $2k a shift and work multiple times a week you could easily clear 300k.

To clarify: I was curious about the most people have seen someone make in a dedicated research year, where they have no ongoing clinical responsibilities .

To clarify further: going into surgery at an academic program so 2 years of research is not negotiable.
