Good spots to do an interview?

Hey yall! I'm not currently a student at Duke, just a young professional living in the area. I have a virtual job interview tomorrow morning, and since theres no great spots in my home or surrounding areas to do my interview, I figured on campus may be a nice place for it. If anyone has any recommendations for a relatively quiet/distraction free spot or building that'd be appropriate for me to do an interview at, please let me know :)

DUKE ALUMNI EMAIL

Hey guys I found this website that was made in protest to duke’s new policy that will be terminating alumni emails. Duke promised its alumni access to alumni adresses forever however they have gone back on this promise which will cause a myriad of issues for professionals who have used these emails to create professional accounts and store data. Please visit this website so we gain some traction.

Incoming Duke grad students: don’t forget about your mental-health benefits

Welcome to Durham!

I’m a local therapist and wanted to share something I think a lot of students don’t realize until they’re already pretty overwhelmed: your Duke student health insurance includes mental-health coverage, and seeing an in-network therapist may be a lot more affordable than you think.

A couple of things I’d suggest:

  • Check the Aetna directory, but also reach out to therapists directly because insurance directories are not always up to date.
  • Ask specifically whether they’re in network with the Duke Student Medical Insurance Plan, not just whether they “take Aetna.”
  • Don’t be afraid to ask about fit. You can ask whether they work with anxiety, grad-school stress, relationships, perfectionism, family/cultural pressure, trauma, etc.
  • If they offer a consultation call, use it. You’re not just checking credentials—you’re also getting a feel for whether this is someone you can actually talk to.

And you definitely do not have to wait until things are falling apart to start therapy. Grad school can be exciting and also lonely, stressful, disorienting, and kind of brutal sometimes.

For transparency, I’m a therapist here in Durham and I work with adults, including graduate students. I’m happy to answer general questions in the comments about how to find a therapist, how insurance works, what to ask on a consult call, or how to think about different types of therapy. I can’t give personal clinical advice on Reddit, obviously, but I’m happy to help make the process less confusing.

I also wrote a blog post about the first semester of graduate school—especially imposter syndrome, feeling like you don’t belong, and the weird vulnerability of being a beginner again. If that sounds familiar, you can read it here:

https://www.arezoupaksimalcsw.com/blog/starting-graduate-school-duke-imposter-syndrome

Also, Duke CAPS is there and may be a great place to start.

Mostly, I just wanted to make sure incoming students know this benefit exists before you actually need it. From experience, I’ve seen how much harder it can be to find a therapist when you’re already in crisis and trying to navigate insurance, availability, and fit all at once.

What does the Chinese placement test consist of?

I’m a rising sophomore and have yet to take a foreign language placement test or any Chinese class, but am hoping to place into the 333 level and be done with the requirement with just one class. What do they test you on? Is reading enough or will you have to write by hand?

Incoming CS freshman taking Math 218 (D1) — how challenging will it be?

I’m an incoming freshman intending to major in Computer Science, and I’m currently planning to take Math 218 (D1) during my first trimester.

I took AP Calculus BC during my junior year of high school and got a 4 on the AP exam. Is it unusual to take Math 218 as a freshman with that background, or is it a fairly normal placement?

For anyone who has taken Math 218, especially as a first-year, how challenging did you find it? Is the AP Calc BC material enough preparation, or is there a significant jump in difficulty?

I’m trying to get a sense of the workload before committing to the course. Any advice on what I should review beforehand would also be appreciated.

UCD Med adcoms brag about skirting SCOTUS SFFA ruling

Documents provided by Davis Med show that its leadership openly boasted about ‘skirting’ the Supreme Court's ruling by using certain class-based ‘socioeconomic variables’ or ‘disadvantages’ as proxies for race.

Items for donation

Hey all,

I hope this post is okay on here.

I have a few items that I would like to donate to anyone who would like them. My time here is up, but I would like these puppies to keep on serving another master.

I’ve attached photos of the 43 inch tv, but have other things as well (vacuum, carpet cleaner, other household items, etc).

If this is not the best place to mention this, then please let me know where to direct this post.

Thanks!

EDIT: CLAIMED !!

Chem 101

Hey everyone! I’m an incoming freshman in Pratt hoping to major in ECE. I’m quite worried about Chem 101, which I’m taking in my first semester, since I did an intro chemistry course in my junior year and really didn’t enjoy it and wasn’t that good with the labs. How difficult or time-consuming is it at Duke?

Should I consider pushing it off to a later semester and instead take a liberal arts, so I have more time to adjust to Duke’s rigor, since I am also taking EGR 101, CS 201, and MATH 218. CS 201 and parts of MATH 218 should be relatively easier for me since I’ve already learned it before. Thanks!

Chapel Towers. Reviews?

I’m moving to the area soon and starting a Ph.D at Duke. have been looking for rental options online and stumbled upon Chapel Towers on Morreenee Road. They seem to have some really sweet offers (I’m scared too good to be true prices but I’m also moving in from Brooklyn and my sense of price might be completely broken by NYC). I looked up references here and found some 6-10 year old ones but would really appreciate some updated reviews. How’s this place? Management? The buildings and apartments? The facilities? The safety of the area?

I’m considering a two-bedroom apartment on the ground floor which is considerably cheaper than other floors which is understandable but I’m also curious about whether people have pest issues or other troubles in the ground floor. Any opinions and observations are appreciated.

Open clubs with a fun community?

Hi, I'm entering my senior year and one of my regrets is that I didn't join a club in any of my years at school, besides my pre-professional org. Wondering if anyone has recommendations for hobby clubs? I'm looking to pick up new hobbies so I'm down for clubs that do literally anything, just trying to get more involved on campus. I am pretty slow on the uptake for a lot of things so clubs that are welcoming to newbies would be preferred :)

This community disappointed me

I made a thread yesterday about the DOJ finding evidence of discrimination at Duke.

The evidence is pretty solid, but instead of having more interesting discussions, people here were having discussions about whether discrimination is actually happening or not. Is this really all that Duke students can think about?

There are so many more interesting things that we can discuss. DEI and affirmative action are directly linked to geopolitics and the US tech war against China. There’s even an interesting connection between anti-Semitic conspiracy theories and affirmative action against Asians in higher ed. Or Liberal elites being closet white nationalists and that DEI is a tool to maintain white supremacy.

There’s just so much to talk about, yet Duke students want to get bogged down by shallow discourse over LSAT scores.

High Visibility Walking/Running Paths

Hi everyone! I’m a woman who loves going on daily morning walks/runs, and I’m looking for some safe places to do that around here. I recently moved from a suburban area with plenty of sidewalks, so I’m still getting familiar with the area and would really appreciate recommendations for places that are safe, well-trafficked, and have good visibility, especially in the mornings. I know I can always use the rec centers, but I really prefer being outdoor.
Does anyone have favorite walking/running trails, parks, or paths they’d recommend? Bonus points for places where other people are usually out walking/running, too. Thank you!
