Cat doesn't use litter but does use grass pad. Grass pad is causing fly infestation. Need alternatives!
I have a cat who never uses the litter box. If you provide him with a nice clean litter box he will poo and pee directly in front of it. Nothing I've tried will change him, I have talked to the vet and tried everything they recommended. I'm not really looking for advice on litter training, I don't think it will work for him, I'm just providing this for context.
The only thing I've found to work is putting one of those dog training pee pads down with the fake grass. He will regularly pee on that instead of peeing directly on the floor. The issue is that flies are using it as a breeding ground. Just washing it regularly doesn't help, I have to comb through it every week to get rid of the fly babies or else my house becomes full of them. I've tried the absorbent pads before but he will just use it once and tear it to shreds then pee next to it.
Are there any alternatives to the fake grass that aren't as full of hiding spots for flies but will still likely have him using it? I've seen one that just have grates over the top but I don't think this will work for him as he'll probably just see it as another litter box and pee in front of it.
Also please don't advise me to let him outside to pee, I live by a busy road and I don't like letting my cats roam outside anyway.
Edit: Thank you to everyone for their ideas. I think I'll go with the option of having 2 mats and then alternating them and washing with bleach or vinegar or just something that will thoroughly kill them and just keep swapping them out so the flies can never finish a life cycle. It's more cost effective than buying a new one every week and still should solve the issue.
