Questions for MLS/MLT students and graduates. Would appreciate any advice!

Hi everyone,

I’m currently doing my prereqs for BCIT’s MLS program and planning to apply for Fall 2027.

I’ve been going through a lot of old Reddit threads about the program over the past couple weeks, but I’m still a bit unclear on a few things and was hoping people who’ve gone through it (or are currently in it) could help out.

- Do they start looking at applications before the May deadline, or is everything reviewed after it closes?

- Can the program basically “fill up” before the deadline if they get strong applicants?

- I’ll be finishing one prereq in January (still before the May deadline). Would that hurt my chances at all?

- Any advice on strengthening an application?

- I have an RMT diploma + strong GPA from that program

- I’m upgrading Chem, Math, Physics from high school (aiming for high 80s+)

- What the program is actually like day-to-day (workload, support, difficulty)

- What practicum placements are like (where you end up, how it’s decided, overall experience)

I’m making a pretty big career change so just trying to get as much real insight as I can before committing.

Thanks in advance :)

Current MLTs in BC/Canada: do you genuinely like your job? Why or why not? Please tell me more!

Hi everyone,

I’ve been considering going back to school for MLT in BC and would really appreciate honest insight from current MLTs in BC or Canada before I fully commit to the program.

I’m leaving my current healthcare job and trying to figure out if this is the right long term fit for me. I’m excited about healthcare and science but also nervous about investing years into school, loans and a career change in my late 20s/entering my 30s.

For those currently working as an MLT:

- Do you genuinely like your job? Why or why not?

- How is the pay, benefits, and maternity leave?

- I know nights are pretty inevitable at first but realistically, how long did it take before you could move into mostly days/evenings?

- Would you say the work-life balance is good?

- If you deal with general anxiety, do you find the job manageable or very stressful?

- Are you allowed to wear your own scrubs? Any restrictions?

- Anything you wish you knew before becoming an MLT?

I’d especially love insight from people working in BC but I’d appreciate hearing from anyone in Canada.

Thank you so much :)
